      Strips bad due to exposure?

A little background then my question on strips.
A few years ago, I had to go to the DR,, who did a blood test, and results showed my sugar was high. After a fasting, I went back the next day, and was told it was still high. I then had to go to the hospital for the glucose test, which came back normal.
Forward a year or so, went back to the DR for something, had the blood test, same results. Did the fast, another blood test showed it was still high. Went to hospital for glucose test, again, same results, normal.
Recent Dr visits show it's still high, but I don't do the hospital visit anymore, I just keep an eye on it, because my Dad had it, so I may be developing it..
Most mornings it will show 80s t0 115 depending on which meter I use.
If I pig out on pasta or chocolate it has read as much as 150s to 180s. Also depends on the meter I use, but generally doesn't read over 135 before going down.
Today, after a couple of months, I finally found my bottle of strips, the lid was not shut though. These also expired in late 2011, thought they have always gave accurate being even a year old. But never a loose cap, letting them be exposed to air and moisture.
Never the less, I use one and fasting was 135... hmmmm, I thought. I then ate some rice and checked, (about 45 minutes) and it was 196... OK, now is the time to worry I thought.
I then remember the lid was loose, so I grabbed the testing solution (exp of late 2011) and checked, and it read 176.
So will moisture and air cause strips to be this far off? And shouldn't the testing solution give a low reading close to the fasting reading?
I used 2 meters that use the same strips (bayer contour and usb) and both were high.
I just used a breeze2 meter (an hour after I ate a cup of rice) and it shows 135.
So bad strips? I'm going to get some new strips at the drug store and recheck.
And lately I tend to get sleepy after a meal and that concerns me. The readings of 196 kinda jolted me,, guess I just needed to talk to someone.

I would get new strips and stay away from rice.
