      Bayer Home A1C Now!

I'm taking the Bayer Home A1c test now. Since I've been doing so poorly lately, I'm curious how it's going to turn out. It says it takes 5 minutes to get the reading. *fingers crossed*

      A1c: 7/10/12 = 5.7 ; 4/16/10 = 5.0 ; 12/31/09 = 4.9 ; 8/13/09 (Dx) = 9.5

Shocked! I was expecting it to be a bit higher than that.. I wonder how accurate they are? I've read within ~.5%, so 5.2-6.2? I'm still happy with that (for now).

Excellent! Forgive me for what may be a dumb question, but even with a home A1C monitor, do you test every 60 days or can you do it more often? Thanks.

HbA1c tests don't fluctuate as much as daily BG tests do. Daily testing measures your 'at-that-moment' blood sugars. Specifically, the HbA1C test measures what percentage of your hemoglobin...a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen...is coated with sugar (glycated). It's basically a "how my doing" type of test...like going for a physical once a year. If you have a good handle on your diabetes control...you can pretty much predict your own HbA1c. Can you test your HbA1c as often as you want? Absolutely, it's just another tool.

Jer, I've done the Relion one and the doctor said it's pretty close to theirs.

I used the Bayer A1C Now kit today, it gave me a result of 6.9 hopefully it will agree with my doctors test in the next few days.

      4/2013 5.7- sensing a pattern here!
Diet-- staying under 50 grams a day of carbs. Not weighing anything mostly rough estimates

Exercise-- 7 days a week but trying to keep it varied. Raquetball, biking, walking with Rocky and now a little lifting

The Bauer a1c is usually within a point or two of what my doctor gets. Great numbers.

      Do you mean a whole point...or a tenth of a point? I.E., 6.0 verses 7.0, or 6.0 verses 5.9-6.1?

I will use the home A1c every now and then just to keep myself in check and on target. I would never feel disappointed if my home A1c hit 6.0-6.5...it just reminds me to be more cautious with my snacks and meals or that I am slacking (getting into a comfort zone) as my goal is always to have a reading below 6.0

Awesome number ...means your working it!!! keep it up and give yourself a big pat on the back.

I meant .1 or .2 sorry for the confusion.. I usually associate a point as a decimal.

Here's the follow up on my Official A1C test by the lab..

It came in @7.2 only 0.3 off from the Bayer Kit.

They were taken 3 days apart if that matters.
