      A1c Question :)

Hi everyone! I'm type 1 and I just used the Bayer a1c test and I'm finally down to 7%. (Been working hard to get it down) Best I've been in years. I would like to get it below that in time for my next appt. 6.5 - 6.8 is my goal. I have exactly 1 month till my appt. Is it possible to lower it that much in 1 month??

I am T2 so I can't speak for T1's, but I lowered mine from 7.4 to 6.1 last time. I have read posts about people lowering slowly for safety reasons but I am new at all this so I really do not know what that is about either.Hope you get the help you need, and great job on your hard work!

About half of the A1c reflects the latest month, due to the way red blood cells are replaced.

You may or may not get to that number in 30 days...but I wouldn't see that as a win. I think the win here is that you're trying as hard as you can and that's all anyone can do. All the rest is just a bunch of numbers.

Like what Bountyman said, the number is relative. Yes, 6.5 is nice. 7 is not bad either.

It has more to do with where you started out before the 7 today. i.e. Are you trending up or trending down since the last test?

I think it is possible, but like the others have said, you just want to try your best. Your test in one month is not the be-all end-all, so as long as you're trending toward your goal I'd say that is a success! I lowered mine from 6.9 to 6.7 over a three month period but I still have a couple of difficult time frames during the day where I'm struggling to get my bgs within a normal range. From what you've stated so far you're making great progress so congrats!

It is possible, as my signature shows... but I think it is easier to lower from higher numbers to 7 than when you're under 7. Cause you can be more aggressive when you're really far from hypo numbers, once when you get in the range of good control, it is not that easy to go aggressive on it.
