I have recently (in the last week) had to up the use of my asthma inhaler quite a lot, and have found that my bgs are sitting higher than usual, and I'm having more trouble bringing them down again.

I'm on Ventolin (cant remember what its called in the US), and was just wondering if anyone else has this issue??

I know ventolin nebs can make my numbers higher, not sure about ventolin mdi/inhaler or other asthma meds (steroid inhalers - not oral0)



Searched google about found that reliever inhalers... ventolin (albuterol in USA) ...

I don't know what links I can post here. I checked out "albuterol AND hyperglycemia" + albuterol AND diabetes on google (didn't bother with ventolin or salbutamol b/c can never find much if I search the Aust names.

Not exactly diabetes-related, but I was told back when I was using a rescue inhaler a couple times a week that my asthma was not being properly controlled. The doctor said that it was bad for my heart to be using it that much. I don't know if he was right about being able to avoid it, but since I've been on a new medication, I've used it 0-1 times a year. Of course, I avoid smoky places and chemicals now.

Lili, I'm on a controller as well, but for some reason I get really bad at times. Like in April, I ended up in hospital for 3 days because I was that bad... but its rare when its bad... I'll deal!

Ventoin can put your sugars high, however you might also be unwell in your system and not know it
maybe see your GP and in could be cooking a cold

I'm on Advair and have a rescue (albuterol) inhaler for use as needed, and haven't noticed any effect from either on my BG. I used to be on Azmacort and Singulair and those didn't bother me either. I rarely have to use the albuterol inhaler since I started taking Advair.

I use 2 inhalers and also a nebulizer and with those for me it is hard to keep my blood sugars under control. I have to use them daily even though I am on oxygen 24/7. It really gets worse when I have to take Predisone and it really goes sky high.

If you need your rescue inhaler more than two times a day, you need more controller meds.

Inhalers can definiately raise bs. Albuterol is a beta 2 agonist, it basically acts like adrenaline, which is what your body excretes when you have low bs to make your bs come back up. The long acting inhalers are steriods that can cause high bs as well. Luckily, inhalers aren't usually absorbed much systemically, which helps.

Since you need the inhalers, my best advice is to just keep correcting bgs. Maybe you will need larger corrections, or more Lantus till you get through this.

My mother is chronic asthmatic and my daughter has mild asthma. I know in my Daughter's case, during the summer months she suffers from Hay Fever and which can lead to more frequent use of her rescure (Ventolin) inhaler. A few years ago she started using singulair (1 tablet daily) and this has helped not only her asthma but also hay fever. As you have summer now, is it possible that you are suffering from hay fever too?

I know that if my daughter has a cold or hayfever, that taking 1-2 puffs of ventolin and then waiting 1-2 minutes followed by using her control (flixotide) inhaler really helps. As the ventolin, helps "open" the lungs or make them more receptive to the control inhaler.

Have you looked at something like singulair?

I can't comment on asthma and diabetes but offer the above for what it's worth.

I'm not an asthmatic person but 4 of my family has it. They use nebulizer. I can see the pain, they can't breath. Nebulizer wan't bad at all because it helps them.

My mother is asthmatic, and my cousin has absolutely terrible asthma. I feel so badly for them.
