Glipizide SR experience?

I have a relative who was just put on Glipizide SR (5 mg x once daily). They do not take any other medications. Anyone here have experience with this drug that can tell me how long before it starts to take effect? Is it better to take it with food?

Thanks

Hi Wiseguy,

I take regular Glipizide.
It takes effect immediately after is taken.
It works good, in my opinion. I don't have hypos with it.

The disadvantage is, that makes the beta cells to produce more insulin, and is believed that this causes beta cells burn out over a period of time. I don't know how long it takes
for the beta cells to give-up.

Glipizide is one of the oldest orals used for Type 2. It is generally safe. I've been taking it for 18 years with no bad effects.

EasyType,

Have you increased your dosis over the years?

Have you considered taking insulin in addition to Glip?

I think there was an increase back in the early days. Not sure now.

I do take insulin now - Lantus.

How many years did the Glipizide alone work before you needed to go on insulin?

WiseGuy,

For my Glip, the doc recommended to take it half hr before meals, so that's what I do, most of the time.

Do you take Metformin?

I have though about asking the doc for Avandia or Actos, but the bad press about the heart attacks of these meds have made me to reconsider.

It's been awhile, and my brian no longer is reliable. I think it was less than a year; then I added metformin. Those two held me in line for about six years.

I take Glyburide, but have been thinking about asking the doctor to cut it out. I take 2, 5mg, twice a day. According to tests, I make very little insulin. So I do not see the point. I also take Lantus and Novolog. I also take Metformin, but understand that it helps the insulin work better. I just do not understand why I need to take the Glyburide, considering the risks, and the cost. I have a really good doctor, I can usually talk to him about anything, but I am reluctant to being this up as It is kind of like questioning his treatment.

No, I don't take any medications. I'm inquiring about this for a family member. And no, they do not take Metformin.

Cool Glipizide SR

Glipizide instantaneous release is an old diabetes med.
Glipizide SR is relatively new-it is a timed release.
Since it is a timed release it doesn't make much difference
when you take it as long as you take it at the approximate same time every day.5 mg is a small dose.
I take 10 mg of Glipizide SR and 1500 mg of Metformin ER
in the morning. The combination workes well.A sensible locarb
diet and exercise also help.My last A1C was 5.5.
Good luck
Eddie
