Question Methylprednisolone and BG?

My doctor just prescribed a dose-pak of Methylprednisolone for my seasonal allergies. I started on them last night. I just checked my BG and it was 140.

My normal fasting BG in the AM is 110-115 (I'm off today so I just now got around to eating some breakfast).

Could the steroids cause this?

Thanks,

Mark

Yes, steroids will usually cause a rise in your blood sugar. I'd suggest you check your blood sugar more often while taking them.

In fact, a co-work of my had a really bad lung problem and took prednisone for several months and developed steroid-induced diabetes and had to take insulin until she was weaned off the prednisone....she is now a diabetic, but controlled with Byetta now that she is off steroids.

Enalapril 20 mg 1 daily (ace-inhibitor)

Initial A1C 8/06: 9.6

03/07: 5.3
06/07: 5.4
10/07: 5.3
05/08: 6.2 (right after dealing with shingles and bronchitis)

Yikes Mark! Sorry to hear you have both allergies & now have to take steroids.

I for one, do not like steroids & wish there was a better med out there to replace it (one that doesn't elevate sugar levels while taking care of other things). Though steroids are considered a "broad spectrum" drug that helps in instances from reducing inflammation to treating skin conditions, etc., they still have nasty side effects: elevated sugar levels in both Diabetics & Non-Diabetics being the most common (& most major) one.

Here's hoping your BG gets back on track & as Linda said, definitely check your levels more often, just to be safe.

They did make my numbers go nuts but they fixed everything else - at least while I was taking them.

I have never suffered from allergies before but this year has been crazy. I can't imagine how they might be connected but I've wondered if the allergies are somehow influenced by my D? I was diagnosed last May and this is the first time in 50 years of living around here that I've had allergies.
