| | | T1 & Thyroid Disease Hello all. I am a T1 and got my thyroid nuked for Graves disease in Jan of this year. Now that my thyroid is dead, I have started on Synthroid 100 mcg and Cytomel 25 mcg and it has really screwed my blood sugar control, I eat very low carb but still need waaay too many units of Apidra to cover no carb meals. I read online that this resistance will subside after I get used to the replacement but I am getting very frustrated, does anyone have any experience with this? Much gratitude in advance, this is driving me crazy. |

| | | i've been type 1 for over 20 years
4 years ago, it was discovered that i have Hashimoto's (an autoimmune attack on the thyroid hormones produced by the body)
i take 75 mcg of Synthroid (specifically, NO generic substitutes) and it would have been about a month that it took for my bg levels to even out again
now that you mention it, i do take a lot of insulin for very few carbs for dinner, i guess i just got used to that
i have my TSH and T4 tested every 3 months to ensure that the meds are at the right level
take care |

| | | Some are more sensitive to Thyroid meds than others. You can try a couple things: Most of us are more insulin resistant in the morning. If you know when that resistance wears off, try taking your meds at that point. Or anytime that is NOT morning time. The reason we have "insulin resistance" in the morning is because of a number of hormones released while we sleep, and adding a sudden burst of thyroid hormone may spike blood sugar levels initially, and then keep them elevated the rest of the day.
Secondly, try to always take your thyroid meds on an empty stomach. Thyroid hormones, both the Synthroid-types and Cytomel (T3) types are very finicky and will not compete well with other nutrients if taken with meals or juice or milk.

| | | They are definitely connected.
Give it some time to even out. don't worry over (take it and don't worry so much) until everything has had a chance to settle down. It takes 6-8 weeks for each adjustment to take effect. Frustratingly slow. You may need to try out different brands of both insulins and synthroids until you find a combo that works for you.

| | | I've had Hoshimoto's Thyroiditis since 1999, when I was 29. At that time I was also diagnosed with an autoimmune adrenal imbalance, and of course I've had autoimmune hives since I was in high school.
I wasn't diagnosed with DM until 2007. I've read that once you have one autoimmune disease, you're more prone to getting other autoimmune problems.
Because I already had the thyroid problem for which I take Levoxyl (thyroxine) I don't know how it really affects bgs, if any.

| | I've taken levoxyl for so many years now I can't even remember when I was diagnosed. I'm sure I can find it in my medical records though. I was recently diagnosed [12-07] with type 2 and take metformin 500 x 2 [1am + 1pm], cozaar [doc says its for my kidneys and heart], and glyberide [as per doc take as needed, before meals]. My problem is the levoxyl is taken on an empty stomach. Now with the diabetes meds I usually hungry when I get up. So I either take the thyroid med and wait for an hour to eat or eat and take my diabetes meds and wait 2 hours to take the thyroid meds. And then there's the days I forget to take the levoxyl and wonder why I'm so lethargic. I sometimes forget for a couple of days and then through the haze try to decipher why I'm not getting out of bed. As far as any resistance to the levoxyl [I think this is generic for synthroid, don't quote me though] I haven't had any. After being at 572 when I was diagnosed, my problem is just keeping my numbers up. If I take 1/2 a glyberide and a metformin 2 & 3 hours after a meal I sometimes in the 70s or 80s. If I feel okay I don't do anything about it, but if I have that frontal headache and my hands tremble, I eat a jolly rancher or take a glucose tab. I try to think I was misdiagnosed, and then I eat something and my numbers shoot to over 200 and that brings me back to reality Good Luck with your thyroid and if your still struggling maybe its not the synthroid, but your diabetes meds. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
