Diabetes and Depression

I'm a type 1 diabetic using an insulin pump. And, I've been dealing with a fairly serious problem of depression - not related to being diabetic.

I've been taking an amino acid supplement, 5-HTP, that's supposed to be helpful for depression. I have heard that 5-HTP can affect the diabetes, though I don't know how....

I haven't been taking it very long, but it has seemed to coincide with my having less predictable, and higher, blood sugar levels. Does anyone know anything about this, or has anyone had any experience with this?

It's supposedly an appetite suppresant that should help control blood sugars.

What is your regimen?

My initial suspect (assuming you are eating less) is your balance of long and short term insulins was off where your short term was compensating for lack of long term. A reduction in food would then send you higher. The fix is to test your basals and find the right levels of basal insulin(s).

Hi xMenace,

Thanks for the reply.

My regimen has remained the same over the past year. I took the 5-HTP supplement for the past 4 weeks or so, though I stopped taking it several days ago (and on those days, my blood sugars have been much better and more in line with what I'd expect).

My regimen on my MiniMed 722 pump has been:
Basal:
12:00am-3:00am: 0.25U/H
3:00am-7:00am: 0.70U/H
7:00am-8:00pm: 0.55U/H
8:00pm-12:00am: 0.35U/H
Bolus:
1U/15g of carb
