I take metformin in a combination pill with avandia (avandamet). I have not noticed any smell from the pills or from myself. Nor have I received complaints from others.

EdnBama: Nice! That person must have a curious nature.

I have to agree with the moderator, the smell of the tablets probably is a combination of active ingredient and a/an additive(s) since they all smell but not the same.

It’s interesting that #3 railed on how Wal-mart buys "cheap" medicine and Walgreens doesn't as well as all the "cheap" fillers out there. This is a fine case of if-you-don't-know-what-you're-talking-about-perhaps-you-shouldn't-talk. Does she truly believe that Wal-mart and Walgreens don't buy from the same manufacturers? Its not like there is an infinite amount of metformin manufacturers out there to choose from. They are both deep discounters who buy cheap and sell cheap so they make their money by the volume of customers they can get into their stores for the low medication prices.

Metformin is a wonderful product that just happens to have an odor and she wants to take it off the market! I wonder how she feels about children’s liquid vitamins with iron, talk about a nasty smell.

Sorry, I digress.

i get my met from target, i've never noticed a bad body smell.

the glucerna shakes has malitrol or whatever the sugar alcohol is called that is added to help make things sugar free and that could be contributing to it as well

i had some the other and that and the met had me running to the bathroom after lunch. it was bad and i didn't even eat much of the meal bar that had it in it, cause it was nasty tasting.

I find this thread interesting not because the pills smell or because they made the OP smell but because of the reported strength of the OP's body odor:

Quote:
Metformin makes me STINK! COMPLETELY! The odor coming from my breath, urine, feces, and out of my pores 24/7 is atrocious! It is getting so bad that I cannot even stand being around me! My wife doesn't like sleeping in the same room with me. By morning our bedroom smells terrible ... smelling like I live in the garbage dump in Nairobi.
A google search doesn't show any information related to any reports of this type, except for this thread on DF. The OP might want to submit himself for scientific study.

Lol. ****. I'm sure that was partially serious, but that cracked me up.

I know *exactly* the smell you're talking about. It's awful, and I feel your pain.

I get it after a period of deyhdration. So long as I'm drinking 2L or more of water every day, no stink.

Ed in Alabama Beware of Avandia... I was put on avandia in November and started having swelling of my right leg and foot. Now both legs and feet are swelling and the doctor took me off of avandia. It is a nasty drug that will sneak up on you....

Thanks for the heads up.

I've been taking it for nearly six years and haven't had any adverse effects.

I've been taking it for almost 8 years. Leg swelling is something I am checking everyday and liver enzyme checks every 3 months. So far I've been Okay. However staying alert is the name of the game.

I've been on Met for about a week now and so far the only symptoms i have are excess wind. I don't know the name of the brand tho my box just says Metformin. It sounds like the starter of this thread may be having a reaction to an ingrediant in the tablets rather than to metformin itself, if you still aren't getting any response from your doc, change to a new one and tell them the probs you've been having.

back in 95/96 i was on glucophage as part of a trial study to see if it was good for T1s, i was on the brand name one and the side effects are the same as on metformin, gas, metallic taste, bloating, basically intestinal issues, but i've been on this med for more than 12 years now and i've never had such a serious side effect as making me smell from every pore and fiber of my being...

there is a medical condition that can make you smell like feces, though i can't remember the name, it was on an episode of house a few years ago...

i hope the new meds help...

I've been taking 500mg ER Metformin, I believe the Manufacturers name is Teva, and my wife says I stink as well. I couldn't put my finger on it until like yourself I went away for a trip and forgot my Med's, and the Stink was gone, I hope someone knows of a fix to this dilema, Like you iStone I'm frustrated and confused...

Have to relate this story after researching fishy smelling metformin. My sisiter in Law in NY has been having a problem with keeping her blood sugar under control. It has been risng 100 to 150 points even while she has been much more aware and eating better. She even went to the doctor again and he kept her on this and added something else and told to come back in three weeks for a recheck. She complained about the smell of the metformin to me ( not sure if to the doctor) and My comment is take it to a pharmacist and see what he says about the smell. Well she went to CVS and they just shined her on and would not talk to her since she didn't purchase it there (she gets it from her insurance (HIP)). She even went to Walmart and the pharmacist was very helpful and told her some gernerics do have that smell and it was nothing to worry about. She mentioned her higher reading, and guess what the pharmacist was enough concerned that he said he will call the doctor and check this out. the best part of the story and this just happened is she didn't purchase the medicine at walmart but at least the parmacist was very curtious and helpful to at least listen and try to help her out. don't know how this will turn out but Walmart is on my good side for being conciencious and helpful.
