A couple of weeks ago I developed some severe pain in my left leg that turns out to be a herniated disc with a piece of the disc that has broken off, is free floating and is pressing on the nerve root.

The doctor put me on anti-inflammatory and pain medication, which I have been taking daily for the last two weeks.

I have been having strangely high blood sugars (200's - 300's) for the last several months for no apparent reason, and since going on these medications, my blood sugars have been mostly back to normal (below 100 and 100's consistently).

I realize that having an illness can cause bg's to be high, does that include having a herniated disc? And do you think it's possible that the medication, specifically the anti-inflammatory, could help my blood sugars?

I see a spine specialist next week and will ask about this, but it's doubtful he'll know anything, so I'm hypothesizing about it myself.

I'm thinking it's probably not the herniated disk specifically, but the pain/stress.

I doubt the anti-inflammatory is helping the sugars directly, but indirectly because of the relief...I'd be in trouble since I'm on them almost 24/7!

I feel your pain! I have herniated discs. Never had surgery. With physio and meds they got a bit better. I baby my back. Until I guess I'll have no choice but to have surgery one day?

Pain pain PAINNNNNN will certainly send your blood glucose up the curtains. But once the pain is under control you might enjoy better numbers.

I would bet that it's the pain of the spine problems. I have herniated disks and this is the reason I have struggled with high sugars no matter what i do

What antiinflammatory? Is it a steroid? Prednisone? Dexamethasone?
