      Question Niacin

My doctor has told me to take 500mg of Niacin a day to increase HDL.
I started a few days ago with no real affect. However, I did notice that
my BG's were slightly higher, within margin of error. It also seemed they
rose for my pre meal numbers.
Has anyone else had this experience?
I didn't take it last night and want to see if BG's go back down.

I would wonder if foods that are rich in Niacin may be of benefit although you would have to buried in the food to match 500Mg

Raising BG seems to be a side effect of niacin
"People with type 2 diabetes often have high levels of fats and cholesterol in the blood. Niacin, often along with other drugs, can lower those levels. However, niacin may also raise blood sugar levels, which is particularly dangerous for someone with diabetes. For that reason, anyone with diabetes should take niacin only when directed to do so by their doctor, and should be carefully monitored for high blood sugar.

Maybe if you took a smaller dose of niacin you could balance the blood sugars with the cholesterol lowering effects.

I used niacin for 15 yrs before dx but COULD NOT use it after. I was a true niacin believer, but my blood sugar was not only high, it was unpredictable so even insulin would not have helped. Never again. NOR STATINS!!!

You started taking Niacin only few days ago, how do you know if it affected your HDL?

I started taking Niacin a few weeka ago and do it not very regularly, but it seems that it does help my BG - it seems that they are actially lower when I take it. However I'm also taking other supplements; magnesium citrate and chrominum picolinate and not sure what is more beneficial. So far I think magnesium was a great addition, I'm not so sure about niacin or chorminum picolinate though.

There was a very large study performed on the effects of Niacin and Statins that was halted because although the combinatio made your CHL numbers look good it had no preventative effect on CVD
