I am new to the whole D thing. My son T was dx'd just 2 months ago. He is 3.5yrs. Currently learning a lot about D, testing like mad and using Lantus (4 u evenings) and Apidra 1 - 2 u premeals.
Any other kids out there suing same combination of insulins? Got bit worried since I read that the tests/ trials were not done with these insulins on kids under 6. Also Apidra was released only 5 months ago (here in South Africa).

Trials with many medications are just not done on small children, unless they are a particular "audience" for a drug, for practical reasons, costs, etc.
It is my understanding that these insulins, because they are of recombinant DNA origin, can not be diluted with distilled water. That would make accurate dosing in the smalll amount your child needs difficult.
It must be very difficult for you and your child, my heart goes out to you. There are other parents in the forum, some also with very young children, who may be able to help and support you more directly that I. There are also some young adults who have been diabetic from a young age who can provide their perspective.

My son was dx at 15 mo old and he is now 5....right from the start he was put on lantus and novolog....i think that besides the pump lantus or levemir is the way to go. the other insulin out there NPH is just awful for a child, you end up feeding the insulin instead of the child!! it has a terrible peak with it and children have to eat on a schedule (try making a 15 mo old do that, which is why my son was put on lantus at diagnosis)......my son is now using an insulin pump and it has been the best treatment for him.......lantus may not be approved for children under 6 but it has been used for many years and no problem (at least for us) hope that helps...

I know of some Mum's in the UK who had to sign a disclaimer saying they wouldn't sue for using Lantus because their child was under 6 yrs old.
If you are really worried about using Lantus email the manufactures and ask them for all the info available.
Firms are normally very helpful.

I think the important thing with a child that age (or any age) is controlling the diabetes and that is best done with Lantus or Levemir and Apidra, Humalog, or Novolog.

Sorry for delay in commenting back and for error in first message: I was meant to say " anybody using" and not "suing" ...... see.... subconsiousnes...

Anyway, we are happy for the time being about the performance of Lantus/Apidra Insulins it is just that I haven't heard that many kids are using them. Also Autopen24, which we are using here comes in dials of one for Apidra and two fr Lantus. Sometimes, since we are on such small doses, I need to dial one and a half for example.....

Are the pens for these insulins in USA same, no half dial?
