Could I do this test at home?

I am new to this forum. I would like to ask, if anyone knows, whether a test with a glucose tester like Accucheck or One Touch Ultra Smart Blood Glucose meter would give me some indication one way or another if I am at risk. I have a few of the symptoms and am in the 50age group. I have been thirsty lately and have a few of the other symptoms.

I can go to my doctor but there is usually a wait of several hours just to get the order and I have to be very careful not to get colds or flu so avoid it if possible.

I can have access to one or the other of the meters and testing strips (mentioned above) but wanted to know if this home test could be enough info for me to put my mind at rest or to send me to the doctor.

Thanks in advance for any input or advice. Note, I am trying to avoid going to the doctor.

hi bellabella and welcome to df! testing at home will tell you if you are pre diabetic or diabetic. take care,trish

You would know pretty fast if it pops up that you are over about 160. I mean if it pops up and says 320 you would now for sure. But do yourself a favor and see a doctor ASAP dont mess around with this stuff. It will mess you up bad and perminently.

Do a couple of tests as soon as you wake in the mornings. I say a couple because results can vary. If they are close, they are probably correct. Follow the correct procedures: clean hands and not out-of-date strips.

Signs and Tests
Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed with the following blood tests:
Fasting blood glucose level -- diabetes is diagnosed if higher than 126 mg/dL on 2 occasions.
Random (non-fasting) blood glucose level -- diabetes is suspected if higher than 200 mg/dL and accompanied by the classic symptoms of increased thirst, urination, and fatigue (this test must be confirmed with a fasting blood glucose test).
Oral glucose tolerance test -- diabetes is diagnosed if glucose level is higher than 200 mg/dL after 2 hours.

Thank you for your replies. Have you any thoughts on what is the most accurate and comprehensive testing meter for my purpose? I am paying for one of the above mentioned or other type, so I might as well get the latest.

i use the accu-chek aviva. it comes with it's own lancet-the multiclix-vitually painless testing. it's generally a matter of opinion,i feel......good luck! trish

Sorry to be a nuisance I have been online looking for the best deal and I see words like lancets, "comes without lancet device", meter, strips, etc. Are these four separate things I have to look for and buy from the same manufacturer?

What exactly do I need to do the test and how many lancets and strips to make sure I do or don't have to be concerned.

I don't know about in the U.K., but in the U.S. most meters come with a "lancet device" (pokes your finger) and a sample pack of strips (usually about 5-10 strips). Most people clean their finger before testing with an alcohol swab, that's not included in the package.

Actually alot of DONT use alcohol before testing, usually just washing your hands is good and I have read some on this forum that dont even do that.
