| | | Help on interpreting the test results I did a physical exam late march. My blood sugar was 93 after fasting. Later on I did another test after starving for two days (I had to undergo a medical procedure), the result was still around 90.
My mother has type II diabetes, so I have carefully watched my sugar intake. I only eat desserts in special occasions and seldom sweeten my coffee.
I asked my doctor about this, but was told that as long as my test result is within normal range, nothing to worry. But I am still concerned. What should I do?
Thanks, folks. |

The only advice I would give is is to eat a balanced healthy diet, not too much , favouring fresh rather than processed, manufactured foods. Take part in some form of exercise on a regular basis. Thats what everyone should be doing. |

Are you exercising regularly? That's viatal.

| | | Hi Redrosy!
I tend to agree with both Helen and X-Menace that your numbers would tend to indicate that your are in the "normal" range. Your stated eating style also sounds like you have your best interests in mind when you do eat. Of course, exercise, is essential as exercise manitains our cellular sensitivty to insulin (Type-2 is charachterized as being primarilly Insulin Resistant -- i.e., your pancreas makes lots of insuln but your cells cannot/do not use it efficiently).
With Type-2 in your family history you are at some greater risk of potentially having diabetic problems but, for the monment, you probably do not have a problem as was indicated by your MD.
Keep doing what you are doing and add exercise if you are not doing that.

| | Your blood sugar is still normal. When you fast or get sick, the liver produces glucose, it is the way the body protects us. As far as prevention goes, you know what to do, keep your weight under control and most of all stay as active as you can- |

Sounds like you are doing a great job! |

| | As the others have stated you are ok for the present so don't worry before you have to.
I suggest you find somewhere to do volunteer work, Like maybe a person in a nursing home who has no visitors that would like someone to talk to.. Or some where to read to children or do crafts anything to keep your mind off what might or might not happed in your future!

| | | RedRosy,
I concur, your fasting glucose test is normal. What this means is somewhat unclear tho. Unfortunately, the fasting glucose is often the last thing to go awry as diabetes emerges. Another tests that helps flag emerging diabetes are that your blood sugar 2 hours after a meal remains at an elevated level (> 140 mg/dL). The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test(OGTT) that a dr gives you checks this. You can probably borrow your mothers meter sometime, to do your own test occaisonally. Make sure you use a new lancet and you will be fine.
You are doing the right thing by watching your carbs. Even if you never become diabetic, you will be healthier because of it.
