Red face Diagnosed with Pre-Diabetes....What now?

I am most frustrated with this diagnosis. I have tested every year for diabetes and never had any issues till this year (I am 42). My father and mother's side of the family have Diabetes and I had gestational diabetes with 3 out of my 4 pregnancies. I have always tried to be good about what I eat (but I am not perfect and I exercise pretty regularly. How come my test came back high. Despite being careful I am 5'7" and a fit 180. But hey, I could lose some inches on my waist!

I did talk to one doc and she said that she has had very good success with glucophage with her prediabetic patients. It also helped them to lose weight. Losing weight is an absolute bear for me!!! I am willing to do a diabetic diet, but to be honest I have my doubts as most diets never seem to work for me and I already work out consistently. Help!

hi there! i also was doing almost "everything right" for years and years.

i had a very strict low-fat, high carb diet. lots of salads, fruit, vegetables, grains etc. no eggs, small pieces of meat, no butter etc etc etc.

and yet my lipids sucked big time. i was overweight. my BP was slightly high. i was generally not as healthy as i was used to.

then, with the onset of diabetes, i discovered that my "eating right" was in fact not "right" for my metabolism.

i significantly reduced carb intake. eliminated fruit, grains, flour, rice (and othet massive polysaccharides) from my diet. increased fat and protein intake. and bang!!! my lipids became better than good, the weight dropped off and my blood sugars normalised!

wow.

i wish i knew then what i know now!

Thanks Joel for the input. I had always thought that if you had a diabetic tendency that you would do well on a diet like atkins, however, I was the choice few that only lost three pounds on that diet. So I assumed I would never have an issue with diabetes. I am now seeing I am wrong. My cholesterol was a little high too for the first time. Yikes!

I am not sure what to expect when I go back to the docs. I am also not sure what to press for. Do you know what I mean? If glucophage will help along with a specific diet geared toward prediabetic than I am game. But I more affraid that they will say. "Diet and be on your way." Thus, I would fall into the cracks. I am not a very pressing person.

Talking pre-diabetes

hey everyone! My name is Vince. I live in Denver, Co. 2 weeks ago I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. I decided to get a physical after turning 34. Thought I was superman till now. My father is a type 2 diabetic. Us Italians like our pizza and pasta. Looks like I will have to learn to stay away from it from now on.

i know what you mean. all i can say at this stage is use the info from your doctor and the dietitians (etc) as, just that, INPUT.

do not take it as gospel.

read here. read the net. check your bgls and see what they are doing.

we will do our best to help you figure things out.
