Also, with exercise instead of my BG's going down they go up?
Is this still normal...? |

| | | From everything I have read, the only thing normal in D is ... everything is ... abnormal!

| | | Honestly, I usually run low when I'm not feeling well.
Although sometimes it runs high when I'm sick.
It never makes sense. |

| | | Hi Hardingnerd!
Infections tend to make BG levels rise as the body fights it. Can you get low BG when you feel sick? Yes, but you probably don't have an infection.
As to BG rising after exercise, that is quite normal. If you, during the course of exercise, deplete the glucose in the muscle cells as well as the blood stream (often accompanied by that familiar "burn" from lactic acid which is a signaling mechanism) your liver will pump out glycogen to compensate, if you deplete your liver stores your body will have the fat cells start dumping their stored glycogen. If you've gone this far, chances are your body is dumping glycogen at a very fast rate and that doesn't turn off quickly as the glucose must be restored to the muscles and liver and your BG level spikes.
I know this from experience. As an avid, and hard charging cyclist, I get this effect a lot. At this time of year when my bike rides start to be over 90 minutes just about every day I drain my fat cells pretty regularly and if I watch my diet, I shed pounds fast.
Once the muscle cells are filled up, and the liver replenished your BG levels will drop to "normal" levels - normal for you that is.

The fun thing with D is that it is consistently inconsistent. |

| | | Typically, I go low for days and then HIGH, and I mean stratospheric high, for days. My theory is my body's "glucose response" to illness lags behind the infection...so initially my "defenses" are using energy without the assistance of any glucose stores, lowering blood sugars. Then, my liver, my muscle glycogen, who knows, realizes there is a fight going on and says "Oh ****, here fellas, have some glucose!" and dumps glucose to assist the fight.
Yeah, I have a vivid imagination.
Zicam doesn't seem to affect my sugars.

| | | This is the first time I've had a full-on infection since I started testing, and I've been hanging out around 115 during the day (this isn't fasting, I've honestly been not good about checking those consistently, but the times I do I've been in the high 90's, but that's not abnormal). After I eat it goes up higher than it usually does, too, but I assume that's because it's "resting" higher than normal, haha.
I hate being sick. I hate sinus infections SO bad. And I was running a fever last night. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
