| | | Blood Glucose levels Hi All
I was told by my doctor to start monitoring my BG levels at home due to symptoms of nausea/vomiting( had many GI tests), dizziness, faintness, numbness/tingling in hands and feet at times. I was told to test in the morning fasting and before each meal and at one and two hours past. My fasting numbers have been 95 and 100.
Last night at dinner
before dinner at 6:30: BG 98
one hour check at 7:30:BG 153***
after one hour check had ice cream(snack)Got nauseous and vomited ice cream(should have skipped it)
two hour check at 8:30: BG 107
Should I be concerned about the one hour check at 153. Breakfast and lunch were normal. I read that the one hour check should not go over 140 in a non diabetes, non pre diabetic person. Any input would be great. |

| | | Also I am 33, 5'4, just had a beautiful 9lb 1oz baby girl in August(docs were surprised after I had her that I didn't have GD) I am 30 pounds overweight and still trying to get back to my pre pregnancy weight. My concentration sucks and I just feel spaced out all the time and I am exhausted. Thanks for any advice. |

| | | Hi Velvet,
I'm sorry to hear of your problems. It sounds as if your Dr. is investigating several possibilities. I can understand your concern, but don't jump to conclusions just yet. Yes 153 is high for a nondiabetic but the occasional nD can go this high. Also, being ill can certainly spike the sugar levels of a diabetic, so possibly it can do the same for a nD. Your fasting numbers are also slightly elevated, but again this could be because you are sick. After a few days, you will have a clearer picture. Try not to worry too much. If you are diabetic, you have caught it early on, and minor healthy adjustments to lifestyle will probably be all that you need. * I just saw your new post. If you try 1)cutting out all 'junk' food, not eating sugar eg., and severely limiting 'white' food such as rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, and 2) getting at minimum 30 mins. walking everyday, and you find the tiredness and mind fog disappear, you may have found your answer regardless of an 'official' diagnosis.

| | | I wouldn't try to make too much sense of this one incident and the blood sugars that it produced. We don't know why you vomitted. Cause or effect of the same things that are causing your high blood glucose?? We just don't know. For now, just keep testing.
But to be honest, yes, I would be concerned about a 153 reading. But don't jump to conclusions too soon.
Why do you think your got nauseated? Any idea?
Did your doctor tell you the results of a "hemoglobin A1c" test? It might be called "HbA1c" or just "A1c"?
Did you have a glucose tolerance test, in which they give you a syrup to drink and measure your blood glucose before and then several times after swallowing it?
By the way, I was not found to have gestational diabetes, but was similarly overweight (a little shorter) and my baby was just 2 ounces smaller than yours. No one said anything at the time, and indeed, I don't think I did have GD, either. But in a short time, I was showing diabetes symptoms which I was too ashamed to go to the doctor about for a long time, because I thought I brought it on myself....I'm glad you are looking more closely and trying to get pinned down whatever the cause of your problems might be. |

| I would suggest that you review your fasting numbers from the past several years. In my opinion, a steady rise in this number over the years is a reason to be fearful and to take action regarding diet and exercise. Many on these forums have seen a progressing fasting number evolve over time into Type 2. |

| | | Thanks for all the replies..I will keep checking my numbers. Is it strange that my numbers never fall below 95 mostly in the low 100's all day?..101 tonight before bed..it's been about 5 hours since I ate..I figured in would be lower by now? My highest number today was 133 at my one hour check for lunch. |

| | | Hi Velvet!
Welcome to the club you never wanted to join. As to your initial posting, I have questions before I can make serious replies.
You mention having dinner at 6:30 and you tested an hour later. What did you eat? If you had a carb-heavy meal that could explain the 153 an hour later.
As your body is recovering from pregnancy you are going to have some problems and these may show up in your BG levels.
Give us some more details and we can provide some insight from our experience.

| | | Hi
The dinner I had was 4 pieces of thin sliced cooked ham and a half of a sweet potatoe with light butter, water to drink..153 was my one hour reading after this meal. I had my baby girl in August of 2009..she was 9lbs 1oz but I had not tested positive for GD which they were surprised about when she came out so big. |

| | | Also I had a babygirl in August of 2009..she was 9lbs 1oz but I had not tested positive for GD which they were surprised about when she came out so big. I had gained a healthy 25 pounds and was 145lbs before. I had nausea/vomiting the whole 9 months but it didn't stop after she was born. I have had extensive GI work up and can not seem to find the issue so we are seeing if there is some correlation with my BG. plus I get numbness/tingling in hands/feet and have almost blacked out on more than one occassion when I would wake up nauseous go to the bathroom sink and on my way back to bed get so dizzy, see spots and feel as if I could pass out. I have good self esteem and never had issues with food or my weight. I wonder if even if my numbers are ok if they are too high for me personally and just make me sick. I feel nauseous before I eat, then I eat feel slightly better and feel even worse within an hour. We tried reflux meds even though tests did not show reflux, but it did not work. These episodes come and go but I feel sick more days than not. Thanks for any input. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
