Cool I am a Pre-Diabetic

I am a 47 year old and have a daughter that has had Diabetes since she was 14 months old. She is now almost 19 years. she is on the Insulin Pump. I recently started checking my self and found that my morning BG have been around 130 to 135 and 2 hours after I eat My BG are running 220 to 300. I went to the doctor but my A1C still is just 6.2.. I guess I am developing Diabetes.

Hi Debbie, welcome to the forums. I moved your post to its own thread so others could better see it and respond.

With your readings, it would indeed seem that you have type 2 diabetes. You've found a great place for information and support.

I'd encourage you to test often, esp. 2 hrs after the first bite of food. This will show you how different foods affect blood sugar and help you make smarter food choices. You goal should be 140 or less. Avoiding "white foods" such as rice, pasta, potatoes and bread will help as well.

Exercise will also help your blood sugar.

There's a great book we often recommend, "The First Year, Type 2 Diabetes," by Gretchen Becker. It's a great resource.

Hope you post often.

With those numbers you are already diabetic, not pre. What did the doctor tell you to do about it?

Debbie, you probably realize that these these post prandial numbers especially are dangerous! What did you doctor do?

You should insist on a fasting glucose tolerance test for a firm diagnosis.

I read today that by the time most people with T2 diabetes are diagnosed, they have lost 50% of their beta cell function. It's very important to be very aggressive with your monitoring so you can get tight blood glucose control and minimize complications.

I am a secondary diabetic. I lost 2/3 of my pancreas to necrotizing pancreatitis in 2003. BG started going through the roof in Dec of 2004. This was more than a year after the pancreatitis. I had no warning. The docs never told me to watch for this. Once diagnosed the docs said that they were surprised that it took as long as it did to surface. I started out on MDI then started pumping in July of '08.

You have very similar numbers to what I had when Diagnosed in May 2008. I went to some diabetic/nutrition classes where I learned to eat correctly, lost 40 lbs and went from 27 BMI to 21 BMI. Now my morning BG is in the 90 range and I control my carb intake to get under 140 two hours PP. My recent A1C was 5.5. The better you can control it the longer you will live with no complications.

Bottom line is managing it now and you will live a healthier life. Sometimes I begin to think having Diabetes was a good thing since it made me loose weight which I could never do before and eat healthy foods.

I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic in June, went to see the Endo the 13th of Oct, and she said that she thinks I have secondary diabetes (or secondary pre-diabetes in my case).
She suspects a tumor on the adrenal glands or on the parathyroid glands. Did a lot of blood tests. Going to see her on Tues for results. Seeing a dietition on Friday to help control bg in the meantime.

It's just great to hear there's someone else that also suffers from something like that.
