Secondary Diabetes Follow Up

So, I went to see my Endo yesterday to get the results of all the blood tests. Thyroid functions that she tested were fine, but she ordered a whole lot of other thyroid functions tests now.

With the tumor marker, she did pick up that there is a tumor somewhere (levels were elevated - trouble is to find it), and she firmly believes that the pre-diabetes is because of that.

I also have a Vitamine D Deficiency as well as high cholesterol and High LDL levels (triglycerides are fine), so my cholesterol is heriditary.

She ordered a number of blood tests now again, and after she gets the results of that, she will do a scan where they inject a dye that will hopefully indicate the whereabouts of the tumor. She also ordered another GTT with 30min readings to check my bg.

I am sitting at the moment with very mixed feelings (very emotional). On the one side I am ecstatic that she at last found out what the cause of all my funny symptoms are, and according to her, if we sort out the tumor, all the other symptoms (pre-diabetes, nausea, dizziness, etc) will disappear. On the other side I am scared to death, because there is always a possiblity that a tumor can be malignant, although she reassured me that most endocrine tumors are benign.

So, hopefully within the next month or 2 all will be sorted. In the meantime I saw a dietitien who helped me with a low carb diet to try and save my beta cells that I have left.

Miemie, it's no wonder your feeling emotional. You have been given news that cant be taken too lightly.
I do hope the tests are to your favour.

Hi Lee, thanks so much, I do hope so too. Everyone does not understand how I feel at the moment, and taking it very lightly, which is making it worse for me, as I am an emotional person without any outside factors

I will hopefully know within the next few weeks. Problem is the blood tests I must have done, when I am really feeling bad, which is a bit of a difficult one, because you have to find a 24 hour lab, but we'll get there.

Oh, Miemie, I am glad your endo explained to you ... "tumor" does not mean cancer! Sounds like she is following up very thoroughly, and in that you are fortunate.

It might be a benign adrenal or pituitary tumor, relieved by surgery.But it has got to be a scary time for you, nonetheless. I have been through the waiting and biopsies four times, so far, and it is never a pleasant wait.

Hi Linda, yes, I am very fortunate. She is fantastic, I searched so long for the right doctor, and finally found one. I think she is thinking along an adrenal tumor.

sounds like you have good reason to be emotional!!!! you have a lot on your plate to deal with....sending good thoughts your way for good results as you have to deal with the stress of waiting....be kind to yourself...baths, walks...you get it...what every works for you...keep us posted!!

Hi Susan,
Thanks so much for the kind words! It's just so great to be able to talk to people who understand. I will do so, I need to work in some exercise anyway, and walking is good, ecspecially in South Africa at this time of year, as it is summer and our temp is between 25 and 30 dc, so will definitely do that!

I don't know if this link will help, but it might give you a little insight into the test you probably had:
Thyroglobulin: The Test

And, hopefully, to reassure you just a bit, in all of the endocrinology reports that I've transcribed which pertain to the thyroid, in each case the doctor reassured the patient when the results were positive for cancer cells, in terms of having a good prognosis.

That basically means, if you don't have grandkids yet, you're definitely going to be able to spoil them after they're born many, many years from now.

That is reassuring thanks snow bunny, I don't have grand kids yet mine is only 6 and 8, so it's far for me to go stll

Aaahhh, thanks David, I appreciate it! I'm really trying to relax and not to think about it too much, although it is hard. I think that I don't stress about it, but I can see at work that it's affecting me, my concentration is not what it should be!

But, all your kind words and encouragement really, really helps!! You guys are life savers
