Hi April,

I am not sure where you live, but your doctor may give you a blood glucose monitor. Many times reps come through their office and give them away so you will buy the strips. I would certainly find a monitor that has the least expensive strips in your area. Most work pretty well and are accurate. Walmart sells an inexpensive one called a Reli-On. This time of year, many drug stores will have free meters with the purchase of test strips. I have also received some in the mail for free by just filling out an online form. Freestyle has inexpensive meters. Usually the meter isn't the expense. The expense comes from the strip purchase.

I am in australia, but accu-chek hand them out for free all the time. Even the diabetes educator at the local hospital gives them to you.
