When you clock in at a number over 250, and you want to correct but your pump tells you not to thanks to IOB. You decide another unit won't hurt, then go low. Smart pumps truly are smarter than us sometimes.

ya, but dont u hate it when you are at 250, and your pump doesnt let u correct cuz of iob, so you dont correct, and 2 hours later your only at 230?

i think iob is just a completely random thing. sometimes the iob it gives you really does affect your bg, but sometimes it doesnt...

How does a pump NOT let you correct? You can override all the functions on a pump if you don't trust the numbers.

You can over ride, instead of using bolus wizard do a easy bolus and you can give your self a correction that way. I actually just did it.

I think that is the hardest thing for me to get used to with my latest upgrade (from a minimed 508 to paradigm).

I find that the iob is correct if I have already taken a bolus for high bg, but it tends to be wrong if I hadn't taken the right amount in the first place (mainly if I didn't count my carbs correctly, like when eating out).

So I tend to only override (just type in the insulin the old fashioned way) for the amount of carbs I can estimate I didn't estimate right in the first place.

In a response to a question someone had on here about drinking/drugging while being diabetic, they said we are like full time nurses ourselves (and you wouldn't want an intoxicated nurse working on you). I think this is just as true with counting carbs, etc. The great news about that is that we can learn more as we go on.

yeah, i did that yesterday. I really try to trust the pump, but I was worried because it my BG very rarely goes that high.

It does frustrate me when it tells me Not to correct, but sometimes I override my system's suggestions.

However, the oddities of being human include the fact that sometimes, the override will cause my bg to drop too low, while other times, it'll either remain higher or go back to normal & stay stable. Go figure! If it happens to be a set issue, my bgs may remain higher, but in that case, I'd just change the set...

I often correct when the pump tells me not to. As long as I'm not heading out or going to be very busy, if I'm high after two hours I will need a correction. By high, I mean 180+. I wouldn't correct for 160 or 170 at 2 hours. Usually.

The thing I hate is when you put in a BG that's below your target, and the pump subtracts some insulin from the suggested bolus. It seems to subtract too much a lot of times. To try to avoid hypos and get my awareness back, my range is set for 100-140. So if I put in 83, the pump subtracts for that. I now ignore the subtraction of I'm 80 or above, and just manually change the bolus back to the full amount.

I don't have a pump, but what I always do is when I am high I check again like 30 minutes later if I am the same or higher I am correcting. That is one way to not get a low............

What I hate is when the pump says 250, and no correction is needed, yet I still correct, and **** it...two hours later...240. WTF?
