Snack bolus

Do you take a bolus for your night/before bed snack eg 15carbs?

Always, unless I've been dropping at night for some reason (basal rates need adjustment). Otherwise I'll just wake up high.

Yes. If your basals are set correctly every time you eat some carbs you should bolus. Unless I have some heavy physical activity planned.

hi carolyn, is there a reason why you are snacking at bedtime? i thought your basals were okay now? ah! you could be hungry!

i bolus for everything i eat unless i'm treating a low, then i only bolus for what i eat minus the correction carbs.

hope you are well

I agree with all of the above. One of my aims with the pump was not being forced into eating at any time. I do not go with a bedtime snack these days unless I'm actually hungry. If I do want something, it will be a weighed amount of milk and a biscuit and I will bolus for all of it.

If you 'need' the snack to avoid night hypos then you need to adjust your basal rate.

...And through the night it's love is free
It whispers and it flirts with me
And then it takes me, hard and deep
Rolls over, farts and falls asleep

And I would wake up, feeling used
My body broken, bent, abused
But now I match it, hump for hump
I give it plenty with my pump

I don't know why you would need to "snack" at bedtime if you aren't dropping at night. If you do drop, then I'd eat the 15g of carbs without a bolus.

If you don't drop, there is no need to "snack"...bedtime snack is an OldSchool Diabetes term to protect against wacky old insulins...

I'm not saying you may not need to snack...but the bolus would be counter-productive and probably cause more problems.

I just reduced my Lantus by a couple of units and rarely need to eat after dinner...prior to reducing, I always dropped about 50 points at night.

I only eat a snack if I want to or I'm more active than usual. For the former, I will bolus. For the later, it's a judgement call.

But for hte most part, mandated, uncovered snacks are a thing of the past. Get your settings correct and use your pump to your advantage.
