It pays to be prepared!

Wow. I got home last night and saw i had 22 units left in my cartridge. So i thought i would change in the morning. I slept, nullified the alarm and woke up, got changed and off to work i go. I didn't even see how many units i had left @ breakfast!

Just before lunch i check my BG's and did a small correction: 3 units left!

So i've just got my spare cartridge and vial of insulin, refilled and have 187 units

Lesson for a new pumper: carry spares for EVERYTHING!

Posted about it here: First Overseas trip with my new baby

Went really well! I set off the metal detector twice leaving SFO, i accidentally left a Unite for Diabetes pin in my jean pockets, so i got taken out for a full pat-down and wand-down. They didn't care about the pump! When i got to Sydney i struck up a convo with a Customs agent who asked why i declared "weapons". Turned out he had Type-1 as well, on NovoRapid and Lantus, and we chatted about the pump, much to the dismay of the waiting passengers! So i didn't go through customs, he just let me go!

I had a one-day trip to Melbourne yesterday, and they pulled my bag off the x-ray to ask about my pens and needles, but the lady noticed i had a 'thingy' attached (in her words!) and just gave me my bag and let me go

Just last week (after 2 months of pumping), I started carrying my current vial of insulin in my D pack that goes with me everywhere. Well it wasn't a moment too soon because the next day at work I got an alarm "Insulin Delivery Stopped - Change Pod Immediately".

I was proud of myself for having the insulin with me, I activated a new pod and when I went to put it on I dropped it on the bathroom floor and the alarm started screaming at me. Of course I was at the end of my vial of insulin and had to go all the way home to get more.

So now I am super prepared with my vial of insulin and syringes.

My purse is exploding too...

I havea whole kit I toss in my backpack every day. Besides my meter (and backup meter!) I have a plastic Rubbermaid-type food storage container with 2 extra sets, a reservoir, current vial of insulin, 2 syringes, AAA batteries (for pump and meters), IV Prep & alcohol wipes, some Band Aids, a few Tegaderm/IV3000, up to 4 vials of strips and a coin (to open the battery cap). It sounds like a lot buut the plastic case isn't that big.

I take public transportation and I'm used to carrying around a big backpack. I can't just hop in my car and drive 15 minutes home to pick up extra supplies.
