| | | The Nanopump is basically a pump like the Omnipod. However, they are surpassing the Omnipod in function. The pump itself wll be in two parts....
Part one will hold the insulin resevoir and pumping mechanism. This part is replaced just like a standard infusion site every 3 days. This may seem like a huge waste, however, the pump can deliver as small as 200 nanoliters. Instead of a plunger, it uses electic pulses to push the insulin in.
The second part will hold the electronincs for the pump and is a permanent part with basic pump functions on the pump. The size is so small it can be placed virtually anywhere.
I think plans right now are then calling for a controller that allows advanced functions of the pump.
It will still use a standard infusion set though.

I must say that I'm most sold on the Charmr (if it ever comes to pass). I like the idea of the pump being small enough to wear anywhere (including as a necklace or watch), along with a color screen that offers different backgrounds, etc.

And there probably won't be a needle free method for at least 5 years because how else will you pierce the skin to get the canula in you to get inside inside the body and not just sitting on the skin?

The problem with it though is it's just a design, not involving any logistics. It's people's idea of what the future could hold, but unfortunately, the designers haven't ever actually built a pump- so they have no clue what it could actually entail.
That being said- I do think it takes someone looking at it from an outsider's viewpoint to get some innovation going. The Charmr may be what we see in the future, and that'd be awesome. |
