Good idea, bad idea

The iPhone apps store seems like a good idea. It got me thinking. I wonder if the same concept could be applied to pump design.

Create a pump that can have it's software updated through a computer link. Then, as the company releases new features sell them for $5 of whatever through an app store. Features may include a food database, customizable alarms, a password protected child lock, a math calculator, finer dosing options, etc, etc.

The current version of the pump would include all current features, this would just be for upgrading features. This way, people don't pay for features they don't want, and features can be realized as they become available rather than waiting for a new upgrade every 2 years or what not and needing to exchange the whole pump to get it.

I think the huge problem is the FDA allowing the modification of a pump by the end user. If you make it possible to connect a computer to it to add features, then a user could make their own software to do different things which could then get around the safety features that are on pumps.

Not only that ... I shiver to think how many nutjob hackers would look at hacking someones iphone linked pump as a challenge ...and how many would think its funny to bollix it just "to see what would happen"
