For me, it took a good 6-8 weeks of "tweaking" my basal rates, insulin to carb ratio, etc, before I finally felt everything was in order.

Don't get frustrated.......it'll eventually work out!

It depends. How long does it take to figure out the logic of "I take insulin to reduce my BGs..." shouldn't take more than 1 minute, at the most.

To figure out how your own specific body reacts to different types of Carbs, depening on activity, insulin type, temperature, time of day, etc....it's a never ending test. But I'd say that you can get pretty good at it, with MDI or a Pump in about one week for startes (to give you a good start). I went to the extreme. Starve yourself for two days (eat dinner the first day only, and only eat breaky the next) to test your basals. Done in about two days then. Bolus' take the next 5 days. First two days eat very simple measured quantities of carbs at each meal and bolus (modify as needed). Done in a week.

I'm glad you found it that easy, but to suggest that it should be easy-peasy does a disservice to those who didn't.

And, it's not just a matter of knowing how to do the numbers (basal testing, carb counting etc.). The principles behind Basal testing are pretty straightforward, unless of course skipping a meal changes all your numbers (I:C, basal rates etc.). Or your body has had to spend 20 or 30 years adapting to cr*p long-acting insulins and is suddently presented with sensible basal doses.
