Talking Interesting Encounter Today

For those who don't know, I work in a clothing store. I had an interesting encounter with a customer and her daughter today.

I was walking by the entrance to the dressing room when I saw this lady and her daughter walking out. I saw that the daughter had the cutest little pouch on the waistband of her jeans. Since I started pumping, I'm noticing more and more things lately. This little girl (8-10yrs) had the tell tale tubing coming out the side of her pouch. I actually chased this lady and her daughter through the store. I walked up to them and asked "Can I ask where you got your pump case?" The daughter seemed shocked at first until she looked at the waistband of my pants and saw my pump. The mother told me where she found the case online. The daughter asked how long I had been pumping. When I told her 1 yr, she said "Ha Ha, I got you beat. I've been pumping for 3 yrs". Just to keep the humor going, I told her "Well, I can do you one better. I've been diabetic longer than you have been alive". She replied "No Way!!! How long you been one?" I told her 24 yrs and she was shocked. She told me that she didn't know many diabetics and only a few pump wearers. I told her and her mother that they could come back in and we would talk diabetes and pumps any time she wanted to. She thanked me and left smiling.

How's that for a good experience?!?!

That's a cool story. Probably gave the girl some hope (seeing an "old" person w/ T1 ;-) .. (not that you're old, just compared to an 8 year old!

This made me smile! How awesome for that little girl to find someone else with diabetes. I remember at times growing up feeling all alone with diabetes.

I never see anyone wearing a pump! The only other pumpers I've met have been at Minimed classes. One time when I went to donate blood the woman who did the initial testing (temp, BP, fingerstick) noticed mine and then pulled hers out from under her lab coat. But I've never seen anyone just walking around outside or in a store or restaurant.

Hi;
That was nice of you Cindy, I'm sure that little girl will remember you for ever.
I mostly tell my diabetic patients I too have diabetes. Especially the newly diagnosed ones.
Years ago I was caring for an eleven year old girl who was newly diagnosed and her mother said that this girl felt her life was over now. I made sure I spoke of all the things I had planned and had done in earshot of her.When she left hospital her mother left me a small gift to say thankyou for giving her daughter hope. That certainly made my day and 15 years later I still wonder what she is up to

I never really noticed pumps until I started wearing one. There was a guy I went to high school with that had one (back in '84) and since I've been on mine, I think (other than Dewey), I've only seen about 3 people wearing them. Seems like the pumpers are never in my endo's office when I am and if they are, they are very good at hiding their pumps. I don't hide mine. It took me long enough to finally start so I'm gonna show that bad boy off !!!!

Thanks, Cin. Nice story. Made me smile.

I've only seen two other people with pumps and also know one personally (my CDE.) And I'm here in MiniMed territory, too.

I love to hear "contact" stories. For years, and I'm talking a LOT of years, I was the only diabetic I knew. Very lonely. Thanks goodness for this site.

Good for you Cin... a nice connection, and I'm sure that little girl is all the better for it

I remember being out on a Summer's day and as I crossed the street noticed a young woman in shorts and a skimpy top... I only looked because it was the same colour top as my Mother always used to wear ... anyhow she had a bare midriff and was wearing her pump "loud and proud" on her waistband... good on her, I say

The first "pumper" I saw was a little girl in the mall...she was probably 7 or 8 and had it clipped onto her waistband...I recognized it right away because it was when I was still trying to decide whether or not I was going to get one and had been reading through all sorts of literature about them. Seeing her kind of pushed me over the edge to getting one, I figured if she was doing it what the heck was I so afraid of? The only other time I've seen another pumper is at my pump support meetings...maybe most keep theirs hidden? I wear mine on my waistband, don't care if anyone sees it. My daughter calls my pump "Marty" now because I have a zebra "skin" on it (Marty's the zebra from Madagascar, currently her favorite movie).
