Being from the US I don't understand your numbers, 6.0. I can tell you that in Pumping Insulin, John Walsh says to do the over night basal testing and BGs should not go up or down more than 20 mg/dl. I don't know what that translate into your figures but I am sure you can find out.

When I did my over night testing I only went up 9 mg/dl which I was very happy with. That was without eating dinner. When I do eat dinner I can go to bed with a BG of 100 mg/dl and wake up with something around 140, which is too high. I am in the process of tweeking my over night basal to compensate for maybe a slight case of gastroparesis.

Well, the overall aim of BG control and insulin therapy is to keep as stable as possible. So it's pretty simple, the more you keep in good numbers, the better.

The John Walsh recommendation can't really be faulted to indicate tight overnight control (BTW that translates to 1.1 mmol/l: there's a converter in the menu to the right on this website, for those interested). I'd see no reason to get hung up on that particular figure though. At the moment I wouldn't hope to always get that, instead I aim to be in a reasonable range. For me at the moment that means feeling pretty satisfied with it if I wake up between 5 and 8 mmol/l. Since I can tend to spin out of control quite easily, I'd rather four mornings of 8 mmol/l to three mornings of 6 mmol/l and one of 14 mmol/l.

I think improved diabetic control is most likely when you aim for progress, and progress is always relative. Look at what's going on, work towards improvement, and you are on the right track.

My CDE suggested no more than 1.5 in either direction (so from 6, a range of 4.5 to 7.5). That's for a teenager, and actually pretty hard to achieve sometimes.
