A delicate subject

Not quite sure how to ask this and well.....I did a search and didn't find anything but.............For those who wear pumps when your doing the deed with your significant other do you keep the pump on? Take it off? IF you keep it on do you do a temp basal?
What have you found that works best?

You were going at it for 4 hours!! Better than me. For the "short" time doing the deed I have always removed it. I put it back on right after. The max I have had mine off is 15 minutes or so. Usually the activity is enough to keep my BS down but I may just give a slight bolus if I feel the need.

Not a delicate subject at all. It is part of life so aske away. I am not embarrased at anything anymore. I had a 55 year old divorced women ask me the same question at a meeting for diabetes. We had a real nice conversation about it and she thanked me for all the info. No need to get red faced.

Never had to bolus or temp basal.

usually unhook it, but if the set is taped on, which it often is, I leave it on.

287 wow! Even with all the physical activity. Are you by chance involving too much whip cream or perhaps cake icing in your love making.

Well, hubby and I are not really athletic or going for endurance training, so I just pop it off for that time and put it back on after. I never sleep naked anyway, so it's easy to remember to do.

The one time I fell asleep and forgot to put it back on, I awoke about 3 hours later with a high BS - now I have trained my other half to remind me, although I usually just reattach automatically. You DO have to reconnect straight after!

I almost always take it off unless it's gonna be super quick or one way love. Never had a problem with the BGs though.

I pretty much never take mine off... I use the 43" tubing mostly, so it stays pretty much out of the way. If I take it off, I've been known to go high, not usually...just those times where it's kinda marathon. <blush>

Well that's just it...nothing with us is ever quick. I think the answer for us is to check it every hour or so. If we need to put it back on, bolus and take it off again. Gonna be trial by fire for us.

I would imagine pausing to check might be a bit inconvenient and could kill the mood - unless of course small breaks are part of the routine.

My opinion though: unless you're doing it several times a day, every day of the year then . . . what's a spike in the grand scheme of things? If you can bring it back down relatively quickly then . . . I'd say just disconnect.

Also, you could tape it all up to somewhere that's not going to be laid on very often or pushed on like the shoulder or ribs? I dunno . . . just a thought.

Yes your right.....But I don't think we will be setting timers to stop....just when there is a slight break in the...ummm action. We will just play it by ear.

Excellent. Tantric pumping

The first point to tell you is that very few people on here are going to want to help you out with this as they'll all be envious of your 4 hour sessions . Personally, I could do it 18 times in 4 hours with beer and pizza in the long gaps. For all I know, that's what you're doing which may be causing the high, but in case it is 4 hours of the good stuff and does not involve painting glucose syrup on your various bits and pieces then I have a couple of thoughts / suggestions:

Just wondering what your basal rate is at the time of day it happens? Stay with me whilst I explain. With us, we have two young children and the grandparents live a long way off. For that reason, we haven't had a morning session in years. Why is this significant? Well, my morning basal rate is very high and if I have to disconnect for any reason in the mornings then the effects are far more significant than during the evening. So morning sex would probably just about kill me (and the age I'm feeling lately it probably would anyhow). Do you typically have your 4 hours at a time of day when you have a high basal rate? If you have the opportunity to try it, why not have a go at a point of the day when your basal rate is a bit lower?

As stated, I can't do this; it's evenings or nothing, and only then after the little darlings are asleep with a locked door and a pillow to bite on (if needed) so they don't wake up. So the above is something I haven't tried as I didn't even know what a pump was in the days before kids. So we now come to the method I DO use. The clue was in my old sig file which had a line that went

'But I disconnect for up to an hour
For wonderful fun (and sometimes a shower)'

For evenings, my basal rate is relatively gentle. Even so, I look at what my current hourly basal rate is before I remove the pump and give that amount in a bolus. So I have an hour's basal on-board up front. I tell the pump to alarm me with its buzzer after an hour and it sits on the bedside table. My wife is now trained in an almost Pavlovian manner that she's got to be done by the time the buzzer goes off which means we can usually get in a half-decent session, watch some TV and get make sure the kids have a packed lunch for the next day all in one evening I have gone up to 2 hours basal up front with this method, but only for aniversarys and on that occasion I had to take the next day off work as I looked like I'd had collagen injections in my lips.

For you crazy 4-hour kids, I guess you could put in 2 hours of basal up front to at least minimise the high you are getting. If you set the alarm for half-time, you can reconnect for 30 seconds for another quick bolus of your basal insulin (in a scuba diving stylee) to see you over the next two hours.

Obviously, I do not squirt in insulin 'up front' if I'm already low-ish, but then I make sure I'm a little above ideal when we start anyway to give myself a bit of a buffer zone. There is nothing more likely to kill of desire than a case of MHH (or Mid-Hump Hypoglycaemia if you prefer). It's no fun.

Good luck with this, and do let us know how you get on. It's not embaressing at all, it's just another little adjustment you need to make so you can live life the way you want to and make diabetes fit in rather than it taking charge. If, for you, that means 4 hours of good loving to make the on-line community jealous then fair play to you

Gary

LMAO Gary I like your sense of humor! You crack me up, Kudos to you my friend!
It's not 4 hours every time. But, she does get a lil upset at a 15 minute routine so balance is required Most of the time it's at night because well, she goes to bed early and is up early getting her morning job in.
Things like this can't be planned or a time limit set. I do agree with you though on my basal settings and where they are at. My highest basal settings are from 4am to 11am. Way lower setting from 11am to 5pm and then medium from 5pm to 4am
I might look at resetting things Gave me a good idea. See I knew I came here for a reason! Thanks Gary
