Getting free pump upgrade

I saw my endo last week and he said he was getting all his patients who use minimed's paradigm 511 upgraded to the 515. Within 2 hours of my appointment, the local rep from Minimed called me and said they would upgrade me for free.

I was shocked -- that minimed responded so quickly to his request and that they are doing it for free. I was hesitant to agree at first--was it really free or was there a catch like a renewed warranty and therefore longer commitment to minimed. There are no catches-it is free and my warranty continues as if I've never received another pump. So, I'll try it. What's the worst that could happen?

I have to admit, I am curious to try the bolus wizard and see if I like it. Only problem is the paradigm 515's are backordered for the next 3-4 weeks.

So, until my warranty expires July 2006, I'll be using Minimed's latest and greatest. Next year, I'll investigate all pumps out there to see if I want to stay with Minimed or maybe move to the Animas (you guys make it sound so cool )

I'd like to upgrade my pancreas to a new and better model. The one I have now is pretty beaten up and doesn't even work anymore. Unfortunately, it was given to me in "as is" condition, without a warranty... what a gip.

I would think as long as you have your reciept you can return it for a new one. I'd be darned if I bought something brand new and in turn it was actually beat up and didn't work. There's no way I am putting money into fixing it. GEESH.

I was thinking the same thing when he told me this. The Minimed rep does work with this diabetes center (a large teaching hospital in Philadelphia), so I'm sure that does have a lot to do with it. But, the doctor himself is not a huge minimed fan. He believes they make a good product, but are really lacking on the customer care/support end and business model in general.

He really likes Animas, but there is also an Animas rep that works primarily with this office. Animas Corp. is also located just 20 minutes away making it very convenient to have a stong presence in the area.

Anyway, I agree - I'm sure doctors can be "influenced". But, as long as there are choices and it benefits me, I'm ok with it.

Animas Corporation is based in West Chester, PA. It's about 30 minutes west of Philadelphia.
