| | | My first time..... This will be my first time changing my set. My nurse called me to make sure everything was good with me. I explained I would be changing the set tommorrow. He said to me not to worry anout the insulin, since I use very little and my resorvoir is almost full, to only change my quickset. One thing I forgot to ask him. " how am I supposed to get the insulin to run thru?" Do I simply rewind and prime? Need a lil help

Whaddya mean "rewind"? Every pump needs the set primed, yes. With my old 508 and my current Cozmore, you could remove the tubing from the reservoir and swap the tubing with new tubing--At that point it is basically like you have just changed everything new, no difference. So you would prime, insert the set and then prime (or fill) the canula as directed.

| | | with the 715, it goes in this order.
you remove the set from your body.
you remove the res from the pump.
you fill a new res with insulin.
you hit the act button, go down to prime, hit act again, then choose rewind.
the pump will give you a warning about making sure the set is removed, you hit act again and the pump will rewind.
it will beep when it is done, at this point you install the new res, with the new tubing and set attached. you hit esc once, that will bing you back to the prime menu...
you choose manual prime, and hold the act button, this will prime the set for you, you hold this button untill you see a few drops of insulin come out of the canula, I can tell you for a 43 inch set it's about 15 units of insulin to prime, when you see a few drops of insulin come out, you let go of the act button..
at this point you inser the set, remove the needle and now youhave a new set installed.. then you press the esc button once, and choose fixed prime, hit act, thats the fixed prime, for a 9mm canula it's going to be .5 units, that should be already set for you by your CDE/pump trainer. you hit act and then it will prime the canula, when it's done, you have a newly installed and primes set. enjoy for the next 3 days...
as far as using insulin left over in the res after 3 days, you might want to be carefull. that insulin has been close to your body for 3 days, that 3 days at close to 98 degrees, so you might be using insulin that is loosing it's strength, or worse insulin that is no longer good. if you find that you are not using the full 300 units of insulin in 3 days, you have 2 choices, either dont fill the whole res to 300 units, or call minimed and tell them you would like the smaller (176 unit) res's.
did the pump trainer not go over with you haw to change a set? if not I think it's time to call minimed, and tell them they need to seek out new pump trainers, who 1. know how to train people, and 2 will actually take the time to do the job they are paid for..
if you have any questions ot troubles you know how to get a hold of me, just remember, if you are unsure of how to do all this, or just want to be re-assured, we are all here for you..

| | | Cin, I have done this before. I just remove the old resevoir, and set. Detach the tubing, put on new tubing, rewind and prime. (You rewind so that when you look at the screen it tells you how much insulin is left etc). Then I just inserted the site, new tube old resevoir. It takes a matter of minutes.

| | | its not a button but rather a menu item. this is how the pump 'knows' how much insulin is left...

| | I can remember when I changed my set for the first time...I was nervous . It took me awhile to actually complete the whole process . Now it only takes a few minutes . What I would recommend is watching the video they send you that comes along with the pump. I think it will help to refresh your memory and you can actually follow what they do step-by-step.

| | | What Belinda mentioned was what my nurse has instructed. Since it will probably take me a lil time doing this, once I reconnect, will this cause more insulin to shoot into me or does it just continue where it left off?

| | | Thank you for all the advise you have all given me.
I think I did it right. I will know in an hour or so when I check my BS. I was so nervous when I started that I didnt have everything ready and had to rewind again. On the 2nd time I got it. My pump read right where I left off.
A few more questions...
What happens if you rewind more than you should have?
When you are priming your pump is it necessary to go all the way the 30 u?
Will the daily totals confirm the units are being delivered as well as my tests?

| | | You have to rewind all the way. It is how the pump knows. You have to wait for the confirmation beep and then just read the menu it prompts you on what to do next.
The reason it took 30 units is because it was just primining from the rewind point ( where the resevoir is) and back through the tube.
It does not count in your daily totals.

| | | Had to visit the ER.... Here is an update of my chaotic 4th of July.
I finally changed my tubing and did everything I was supposed to do. I waited to test and my BS was ok (124), a bit high for me for not having food in my system. I was planning a visit to a baseball game later and really didn't want anything to go wrong, but it did! I had 174 1 Hr after so I went ahead and changed everything. I waited, I had reached 234. Took a bolus w/ the changed set, waited, I had 224, it worked.... Got my family together and went to see the baseball game. Checking thru the game, I found it going lower but too slowly. By the 4th inning I was at 298! We had to leave the game and get home . I had taken my insulin and syringe and sure enough, I had to put some in (4 units). Got home and began to call my nurse, no answer. After 45calls, still NO answer. My BS had now reached 345. I headed out to the ER, there had to be a doctor there to help me. As, I'm registering to be admitted, I pull out my pump and the attendee says "Hey... an insulin pump just like mine" I was sooooo happy to hear that. I told him he had to help me, lol. When the doctor saw me, he had to call a specialist to help me w/ the pump. I mentioned the attendee and he brought him right in.The doctor was observing everything he did and he checked my pump everything was perfect except for my connection site. I had taken an xtra set, I had a feeling this would be it. As soon as I replaced it everything was running smooth. He showed me a few tips and told me I had to get in contact with his doctor there at the hospital. What an adventure for 4th of July.

| | thats one thing to keep in mind.. if your BS just keeps going up, change the site. Before I switched to the shorter (6mm) sets, mine would kink at the end slowing my insulin delivery. One day, my BS just kept going up, and fast too. In less than 30min I went from 180 or to almost 500... Went home, changed my site, and all was good.
When in doubt, change the site

| | | Clint, Belinda, Cinnabon--
Do you need to add an extra .5 units to cover the canula after you insert your insertion set? Cinnabon, if so, did you do that? Both my 508 and now my Cozmore I have to first prime the tubing (about 30 units) and then after I insert my set I need to prime one more time with .5 units to fill the canula. If I don't, I am in the mid-200's an hour later since I have basically missed an hour's worth of basals... |
