Do you ever experience stomachs that hurt like all get out? When you only use your stomach for your sites it is bound to get sore. Adam's been having issues with his sites and has to change them out every day, several times. His entire stomach is sore, to say the least. We're trying to keep his sites on his left side of the stomach just to give his right side a chance to heal up before using it again. But what do yall do when you can't find another comfortable location on your body to insert a site and the area used is totally sore? Switch to MDIs for a week or so? That's what I'm thinking but, of course, I realize that's a last resort. I just hate knowing that his stomach is bothering him so much. We have an Animas trainer coming out this weekend to bring a 13mm comfort set and she'll show us how to put it on his leg. For now Adam is going to leave the site in even if it is bothering him b/c he can't keep 1) going thru comfort sets (and money) like water and 2) his stomach can't be tortured in this way. The other day he couldn't even insert a comfort set b/c his stomach was so sore. Suggestions? Comments? Advice??

well the 6mm and 9mm are the ones that go straight in. He uses the comforts which go parallel to the skin.

I am skinny and I cant use the 9mm cause they hurt alot.. I use the 6mm and feel much much better.

I used the top of my buttox for a week or so to give my sides a break... it was ok but I couldnt use that area very long as it was kinda bothersome.

Wow, I am sorry to hear you are having pain Cielo, and by proxy, Adam!

I to am a little light on the middle area padding and I have been using the 17MM comfort sets also. Of course I put them in at like a 15-20 degree angle. On my next set re-order, I am going to switch to the 13mm ones. I am going to call Diesetronic and try to get them from there. Deltec doesn't even carry them and Diesetronic is an approved supplier for my insurance.

You can also (I did this) call SpectrRX and tell them you are thinking of switching to them and would like a couple of samples. They sent me 3 sets in like 3 days time. http://www.mysimplechoice.com/. I just told them I wanted the 13MM angled sets like the comfort sets.

Only reason I am sticking with the Comfort sets after trying the SpectRX ones, was the I didn't like the mechanism to connect and disconnect for showers and such. Not terrible... but it is easier to do with one-hand with te comforts IMHO.

I have not had the pain like you describe, so I don't think I can be much help there. I do know that if I get a set in at too deep of an angle and it is "sitting on muscle", then it will hurt and will continue to hurt for a day or so after I remove it.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

I'm pretty much in the same predicament , I strictly use my stomach...which is fine for the most part, but I would like to give that area a break too. I've tried my legs, but it usually ends up kinking and somehow I just don't think my arms or butt area would be comfortable for me. So as you can see, I understand your frustration .

I know sites do tend to get sore now and then, but if you are changing sites out everyday, (ouch )then I'm sure that they are even more so than usual . Has Adam tried the love handle area?

I hope your pump trainer is able to offer you new ideas and suggestions and I hope that his sites start healing and feeling better soon.

Adam doesn't have any fat. He doesn't have lovehandles. The most fat he has is on his stomach and that's even very minimal. He often does say it feels as tho the site is right up against muscle. When the trainer comes out she's going to bring some sets that will hopefully work better and she's going to show Adam how to use other locations. Trust me, I'm not letting her leave until we've learned what we need to learn. I don't think it's fair for him to have to shell out so much money and be in constant pain when the pump is not supposed to work that way. I understand soreness will be there now and again, but not day in and day out, sites shouldn't be changed with the frequency that Adam is experiencing. Thanks for all of your thoughts! We'll keep you posted

I experienced pains for several years until I switched from the cannulas that go parallel. I found the 6mm to be significantly less painful. I am finally healing so I can go back, but I tend to switch off now between the two.

The other suggestion I might make is to get a strong anesthetic from your doctor. I started using EMLA cream and found it held back the pain long enough for my body to accept the new cannula. You might try that to see if it helps. Also, move insertion sites to new parts of the body (back, butt, upper arm, etc).

Wink Pumps?

Could anyone tell me exactly what insulin pumps are, what they do and are used for? South Africa doesn't seem to be very up to date with these things. :****mate:

Pumps are the closest thing to a pancreas. They look like cell phones or pagers that you must wear on you at all times. It has a supply of insulin that is stored inside the pump. Then there is an insertion site on your abdomin (or other areas on the body). A tube runs from the pump to the insertion site. Then insulin is given to you thru this tube, just the way the pancreas would give you insulin, a little bit every few minutes, all day and all night long. Then when you eat, you program the pump to give you a bolus, of course depending on what you are eating. Check out this website: http://www.minimed.com/patientfam/pf...apyworks.shtml
