| The theory I was always taught was "Pinch an Inch." By that I mean you should be able to pinch your skin enough to the point where your fingers are about an inch apart and don't move. If they start sliding towards each other while pinching, then you don't have enough fat there.
Legs can be one of the most difficult places, especially if you hit a muscle (it can hurt like you know what.) I always use the abdomen so far and haven't had a problem. Only once I've hit a vein, a few times I've had some pain, but it was mild enough that I could wear the set for at least 2 days before changing it.
