Silhouette w/ blood in the cannula.

Ok, I just put in a silhouette. I am using them to see if they work in my leg. The quicksets always bend when I put them in my leg.

Anyways, I put the sil in, and there is a little blood in the cannula. What should I do? Do I need to change it?

My thoughts would be to change it. I had that happen the other night where it was a speck of blood in the inset. I debated on changing it but thought I better. Low and behold upon pulling it out it was my second gusher on the pump. If I would have used that it would have either been painful or done nothing.

You can keep it in but monitor yourself closely for the next 6 hours.

I just checked my bg, and it is 200. I think I'll keep it in and if it goes up in the next hour, I will take it out. I'm really cautious when it comes to this sort of thing. I had put it in my side after lunch, and I had to take it out because it made my bg go up to 200 from 104. When I took it out of my side, there was some blood that came out. But, I think I may have put that one in a little too deep.

I will let you know what happens in the next hour. I bolused a couple of units just to see what happens.

In the past I have not always changed a cannula if I see blood. I had a Sil in my side a couple of weeks ago and later the same day I had out it in, I saw blood in the little clear window. I ignored it since my BGs were great. The next day there was a lot more blood and I changed it even though BGs were good. I had a doctor's appointment and thought it would be unwise to go with a bloody site!

My bg is now 193....Going down, but very slowly. Not sure if this is a good thing, or not....

Some people have reported that their BGs tend to rise for awhile after putting a new site in. I usually don't have that problem but sometimes I use a larger fixed prime than necessary, like 1 unit instead of .7 for the Sil. I have never tried a set in my leg, I know I'd end up pulling it out. I used to use my legs for my background insulin shots because the absorption wasn't as fast as the abdomen, so it may just be taking awhile for the insulin to really kick in.

New bg is 177. Making some progress

I only tried one other set in my leg, and it bent the cannula (quickset). I hope that it is not slow absorbing in my leg. But, I guess we'll see.

It's a crying shame that MM hasn't come out with 43" tubing for the Sure-T's. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's just a matter of time.

I am willing to try anything right now because I like putting the set in my leg. It is out of the way, and it doesn't get bumped as much.

161 and counting. I think that I might be keeping it in. I'll keep checking though for a few hours.

Ok, I'm back down to 128. I like that much better. But, now my stomach feels so queezy. Do you ever find that you get kinda sick when your bg goes from high back down kindof quickly?

Yes, it was flushed out when I did that couple of units bolus. I think all's well now. Thanks to you all for helping me with this.

For some reason I'm cringing at the thought of inserting a sil in your leg. Those sets just never looked right to me.

It is really not that bad though. It doesn't look wierd or anything. They look wierd when they are in the package just because of that huge black piece attached to the guide needle. On the leg, they looked just fine. And, it doesn't hurt or anything. I'm a happy camper now.

Just checked bg. 77. I think I'm safe now.

The Sure-T's use the same tubing as the Silhouettes so if you have any extra tubing from those, you can use it. I get the Sils that come with 5 complete sets + 5 cannulas only per box, since I don't change the tubing every time. I only change the tubing when I change a reservoir, every 10 days, which means I need only 3 pieces of tubing a month.

I just got my order from Minimed but I think for my next one I'll ask for one box of Sure-T's to try instead of all Silhouettes.
