| | | Steak This should drum up some passionate responses....
I love steak. Only problem is, being British, cooking the **** things doesn't come naturally to me. I like mine medium, and I always used to fry them. Now what I do is heat up a grill pan until it's hot enough to evaporate drops of water after a couple of seconds. I then put the steak on the pan (after having put pepper and Worcestershire sauce on top), grill it for a few minutes, flip it, grill that side, and then serve. It's an ok way of doing it but I'm sure there's a better way.
So what's everyone's tips for the best way to cook a steak? |

| | | On the BBQ. That is the best. Add a little onion salt, worcestershire is ok too and thats it.
I have also been known to Broil them when I feel lazy.

| | | I like to marianate the steak first with worchestershire sauce and garlic and a little olive oil....or simply in a dry red wine with some chopped garlic. Then i'll either use the grill pan as you're doing...or i'll do it in a fry pan, searing then adding a little water to steam it/tenderize it a little. I'm not very good at getting a tender steak on the BBQ.
Another good way to prepare is to place your steak on a long piece of foil, top with worchestershire sauce, garlic, onions and mushrooms...along with a pat of butter. Make a tent from the foil and place in oven and bake...very little clean-up that way.

| | | Okay, I'm going to be picky, what cut of steak?
- Sirloin
- Ribeye
- Fillet
- T-Bone
- Round
Some steak (such as round) I really only use for making things like Beef Stroganoff. So what are you cooking?
For T-Bone and Sirloin, then I would prefer BBQ/Grill. Fillet (not my favourite cut) is fine fried or in the oven.

| | | As a chef i find your being british quote rather offensive........lol. I think the ways youve mentioned are great as a steak can be boring. I tend to casserole steaks for family and friends with tomatoes, onionsand black olives. If your doing it on a grill pan, rest the meat for about ten mins before serving and try it with a little gorgonzola sprinkled on top.
happy eating!!!

| | | On the BBQ. Never fry it. seems like a waste of good steak to put it in a frying pan. Marinate it or grill some onions and mushrooms with it. MMM tasty!

| | | 4 Rib eye steaks - bone in
1 cup Burgundy wine
1 1/2 cups beef broth
4 portobello mushroom caps, sliced
2 T. unsalted butter
1 clove garlic, chopped
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/8 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
1 shallot, finely chopped
DIRECTIONS
Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sautee the shallot until transparent, then add mushrooms, and cook, covered, until darkened, about 5 minutes. Remove mushrooms from pan, and set aside. Deglaze the pan with 1/2 c. beef broth, and burgundy wine. Increase heat, and bring to a boil. Allow the mixture to boil until it has reduced by 1/3.
Grill the steak to desired doneness. Season with salt and pepper if desired. Remove to a plate, and set aside.
When the sauce is reduced, stir in the rest of beef broth, and garlic. Return to a boil, and continue to cook for another 5 to 10 minutes. Sauce will be thin like au jus. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Stir in the mushrooms. Serve steak with mushroom sauce spooned over.
If you want thicker sauce you can thicken with 1 T. flour or 1T. butter.

3 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon honey
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 cup canola or olive oil
Mix together and marinade steak for 4 to 24 hours.
Season steaks with salt and pepper to taste then grill outdoor or indoor as desired.

| | Just had steak last night in fact so am compelled to answer!
We had new york strip loin I happened to find a couple on sale at Safeway.
I am a bit of a purist so I don't use a lot of different spices, I rub the steak with a bit of oil to make it both tasty and something moist to rub the goodies on, Montreal steak spice (tiny bit) and garlic rub (cut a clove and rub it in before the spice.
I also eat mine very rare, not blue but definitely bloody.
I can't have a BBQ at my apartment so I use the broiler mode in the oven.
Heated up to high heat, 2-3 minutes per side (just enough to get the fat sizzlin'. Let it sit for a few minutes while veg is being prepared.
Last night was super quick sauteed yellow and orange peppers, just enough to brown the edges, still crunchy.
The peppers put my numbers up a bit but not enough to worry about.
My mouth is watering now as I wish I had that steak for breakfast! lol
I could go on and on about steak, it is definitely my FAV meat.

| | | Salt, fresh pepper and garlic powder. On the grill. We like ours pink in the middle but not too bloody.
Serve with sautee'd onions and mushrooms done in a small grill pan beside the steaks and cooked with the same spices.
Add celery sticks and blue cheese dip and it's dinner! |

| | | I had steak last night also.
Used a grill pan and marinated the steak for about a half hour in a mix of olive oil, garlic powder, worchester sauce and black pepper.
My favorite cut is Sirloin, but last night we had New York Strip and Tri-Tip steaks, thin cut.
I also like mine medium rare, but hubby and family likes theirs well done so I take mine off first and leave the rest for them to chew the rubber....

Well Done is the only way to cook meat properly. It allows the flavors to develop fully.
