Hot Cocoa Recipe

I made a cup of hot cocoa this morning using a Tbsp. of Hershey's Special Dark cocoa, 2 Tbsp. of Equal and 8 ozs. of Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze almond milk. It was very good, but do you think it's a healthy recipe? My bs didn't go up much from it.

If your blood sugar responded well to it, i'd say it works for you. I enjoy the sugar-free instant cocoas (Swiss Miss or Carnation) quite often w/o problems. The sugar-free hot apple cider mixes are great as well.

I've also made hot cocoa just as I did before diabetes, only substituting splenda for the sugar with good results.

Thanks for the hot apple cider idea Linda. I've been looking for something different to drink that is hot.

Alpine is the brand I find around here (Krogers and WalMart). They have sugar free spiced apple and i've seen cherry, but not very often. Its good with a cinnamon stick stirrer added. Always makes me think of fall/winter.

The s/f apple cider I just can't hack. It tastes way strange. I don't drink it that often, so I just go with the leaded. Only about 10 carbs, which is what I'd have in a couple of squares of chocolate.

I do my own hot cocoa, too. I did use just the Hood's Calorie Countdown milk, but found it was a bit thin. Soooo, I took a page from Dr. Bernstein's book and used the Hood's, but also used heavy cream! Not a lot--maybe a tablespoon. Made a huge difference. No added carbs, either. But the cocoa was rich, creamy and had that wonderful foam on top. Delicious. I'd say about a 4:1 ratio. Four parts Hood's to one part cream. Worked well for me.
