| | | Bread 101 Is there any interesting ideas on using bread and not just the most typical bread that we see today. If it's out of a bakery, what can we do with it. |

| | | Bread is mostly too much trouble for me! But if I eat the grain bread, and thin slices, I can handle a little bit. Even better if I pre-bolus and give the insulin a head start.
No ideas sorry... I'm all for avoiding the stuff most of the time!

| | no. it is not a dud thread. it is the weekend. everyone is resting.
i haven't eaten bread in well over a year. now that i have started using fast acting insulin, i am adding in very small amounts of bread into my diet.
i choose burgens seed and nut bread. it has 17.7g of carbs for 2 slices.
i have 1/2 a slice or 1 slice sometimes. i toast it and spread it with a TBSP of peanut butter. so 7-14g of carbs. 1-2u of NR and it works real well.
on friday night i cooked bbq chicken burgers. i had a burger with 2 slices of burgen bread, onions, ketchup etc. before dinner i was 4.8 (86). 2 hours after i was 6.4 (115). i bolused with 3u of NR.
by most standards i am still very low carb. but i am enjoying a small amount of the right type of bread.

| | | About every third morning I have a sandwich of Lit Spam, Egg White and 2 slices of English Muffin Bread. That comes in at 26 carbs which is within my goal of 40 carbs per meal. I use a 4 carb per slice brad for French Toast sometimes.

| | | Peter talking low GI/not getting spiked by bread, Matingara's suggestion is great - some of the the Burgen's breads are great for BG (compared to vast majority of breads).
A few of the Brugen varieties have "low - moderate GI" 40- 50, like the seed and nut one, the pumpkin seed one. Unlike a few of the other breads claiming low GI out there like "performax" bread, I find burgen to really deliver the goods for slow release energy.
The best for me is the "Burgen Soy Lin" which I really like toasted and a piece or two will not spike me at all. Try it, it should be in all coles/safeways.
Unfortunately so many breads are spike-city.

| Joel I find that a lot of folk here are extream low carbers and why because exercise will get most people low and so bread is an exelent low GI factor that will carry energy in the long term. Quote: |

| YUM!! Just now I am having some Peanut Butter on a wholemeal bread toasted and the other slice some vegimite and now I am out of bread. Must get some more. Quote: |

| I have counted 50 carbs for my toast and with a 1:5 I:C Ratio and used 10U of Novorapid.
There is nothing wrong with bread, I think that people don't get to exercise or match the carbs that's in bread. Quote:

Unfortunately so many breads are spike-city. | Yes Subby and that is the other problem as my love for the tipical white breads are very spikey but take that into an account to go and bolus properly and work it off. Sadly in our modern life we do little of. |

| | | I am able to get away with a couple of slices of Burgen with Peanut Butter,Hommus or Vegemite at breakfast (with my large plate of beans)
What I would like if any one can assist is a recipe for Low GI bread, a company in Brisbane used to sell a bread mix but no longer due to lack of demand.
I long for a taste of my favourite available here "Phillippa's Olive bread but is causes the mother of all spikes!
If anyone has a source for a Low GI bread mix or recipe I would appreciate it. |

| | | I have Sara Lee Low Sugar whole grain breads that come in at about two slices for 16 carbs many days for lunch. That is still way below the suggested limit on carbs for lunch. I can still manage a serving of low fat chips and low carb ice cream and get a reasonable reading.
I am somewhat surprised to see the reaction of type I people, I thought us pre, or II"s were the ones that had more of a worry with carbs since many of us do not use medication or insulin.
I did notice at a fast food restaurant recently that most buns come in at 30 to 60 carbs just for the bun! So the high fiber bread is a better choice by far, but you have to watch the label. I have read the bagel label and most come in at nearly 50 carbs. Way more than I want for lunch. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
