| | | injecting in a public place Do you guys have problems doing this? I did at my first meal after being diagnosed, in a Friday's... but since then I always go out to the vehicle and do it. I am very private about my shots and stuff though, I really don't like people around when I take a shot. Is anyone else like this, or am I just paranoid or something? |

| | | Probably has something to do with the amount of time you've had diabetes. In the beginning, yeah, I'd go someplace private. In the last 5 years or so, I've gotten pretty lazy and now I just do it at the table. If we're with friends/family I'll ask if it will make anybody uncomfortable for me to inject @ the table. Everybody always says "okay", but I don't know if that's the truth or not, lol!I try to do it as discreetly as possible, but sometimes I do spot other people looking at me. I just smile and nod.
Besides, who wants to "shoot up" in a public bathroom? Blech!
Seems to me that whatever makes you the most comfortable and is easiest is what you should do!

| | I was the same way too at first, I would always go to the the car but I thought people would think I was doing drugs or something. I was just waiting for the day for someone to say something because at that point I was pissed off after being diagnosed and I was looking for someone to "let loose" on. It's not really any big deal and now I have the pump so there is no problem at all. If the pump is something you are thinking about, do it! I was even funny about checking my BG in public but now it's like a second nature.

| | | In the beginning I was a bit embarrassed about been seen injecting in public, but now hardly at all. I avoid making a big spectacle out of it, though.
When at the table, I check my bsl with my kit on my lap. Usually no one even notices. When I need to inject, I again do it under the table (on my thigh or abdomen). Few people notice, and if they do, like Heather, I just smile and nod.

| | | i agree with everyone, it just depends on how comfortable you are with it at the beginning. When I first got diabetes, I was 6 and I couldnt do them myself(well once I left the hospital I refused too) so my mom would always take me to the washroom cuz I was scared of doing them in public. it wasnt until I was 14 that I started to do them at the table. I used to get whiny if my mom told me to just do them at the table before that, but then I got into the mind set of "well I have no choice whether I do it or not, no one can see when I have my back to them, and its only in my stomach..so who cares?" and now I do everything at the table, in my lap of course..I'm sure people would freak out if they looked over and saw me poking my finger and the blood haha. |

| | | I started off the same way. I would always go somewhere private to take an injection or check my blood sugar. Over time I either got lazy or just didn't care an more and started doing it wherever I was at the time. I really don't feel comfortable in restrooms any way, I don't think they are a very clean place to do something like this.

| | | By the time I was 16, and had been diabetic for about 3.5 years, I got over all hesitancy about shooting up anywhere. I did once get hassled by a cop at a Grateful Dead concert while shooting up, and I got picked up in a bus station by a security guard for it as well--but that was during the Vietnam War, and I had hair down over my shoulders, so...
Today, I test right out at a restaurant table, then just pull out my pen, dial and shoot. Most of the time, nobody notices. I have done same in airplanes, waiting rooms, terminals, buses, trains, hiking trails, I just do what I need to. If I were an asthmatic, and required my inhaler, would I excuse myself before puffing?

| | | well, if i have a t-shirt on it's very easy to inject at a table without people noticing. but say if i wear a shirt and tie to church, i always go out to the vehicle, because i dont want to unzip my pants and stuff right in front of everyone, lol. i have also thought about people thinking i was doing drugs or something, or even someone going by and asking to buy some from me @_@ |

| | | harassed by the cops, that would be interesting Mick.
I remember I did it once behind the building that held the mens and womens restrooms at one of the local beachs. I was there at the fair that was going on, and the line up was really long, and I had to eat dinner, so I went behind it, where there was a little slant in the grass area and did my needle and everything. People walked by, but no one noticed, not even the cops. Only this teenage boy stopped and watched me for a moment while i was injecting into my stomach, I just kinda stopped and stared back at him and then he left and I continued. Thats the closet thing to anyone freaking out about it when i'm in public. |

| | | Like everyone says, you'll get very casual about it eventually.
I just whip out my InDuo, check B/S, guesstimate the Carbs., jab through shirt or pants and Bob's your uncle.

But when I was at school I was very wary of injecting at the tabe, even though I was told to by my nurse as I didnt have time beforehand (was a boarding school) and I was taken aside by the head of the school, and given a right telling off because people were complaing, but I always warned them before I was doing it so they could look away... but some people are fickle! After that it took me a while before I could do it in front of people again.

| | | I started getting comfortable with testing and injecting while in college, because I had a friend who was diabetic as well, and we'd have a "shooting up" party. Once, while he was gone, I tested by myself, and mostly nobody even cared, but once this guy looked at me while I was testing, and said, 'That's so disgusting, blood is so dirty, I can't believe you're doing that here in front of everyone.' I could have clocked him, but I just looked at him, and said, 'Well when you get it, and have to do this 4 times a day, you get back to me on how disgusting it is.' I am now very wary of injecting in front of people, especially in restaurants--I always go to the restroom and do it nice and quick. but if I'm out with friends, I just ask and warn people to look away if they're uncomfortable with needles. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
