      Restaurant victory (unexpected, but nice!)

I went to Romano's Macaroni Grill tonight for dinner. Got the chicken scalloppine, minus the pasta side. Substituted roast veggies instead, and also had a small Caesar salad. I also ate 2 bites of bread and about half of a new potato.

      Pre-meal: 78
      One hour: 79
      Four hours: 80

I love that I can eat a few bites of bread or potato and it's OK. It takes away the "forbidden food" stress, ya know?

Glad you had success!! I too have had great success with eating out - Yesterday I had Applebees for lunch - had the fajitas - minus the tortillas lol. They brought all the other stuff out and also gave me some veggies and sauteed mushrooms in place of the tortillas - it made for a funny looking messy meal - but yummy!! Same here - I occasionally have a taste of the "forbidden" foods and it satisfies me too.

Congrats! I find eating out to be difficult, except for fast food places. When I eat at a normal restaurant they always seem to have marinated or sauced the foods. One would think just meat or seafood and side veggies would be no problem, but they sneak in sugar. I can often taste it even if they say none is there, then my meter tells me later they lied!

I actually do better at McD or Wendy's. McD will make me burgers with two lettuce leafs instead of buns, they have a nice side salad and their caeser dressing works for me.... one can, of course, order it bunless and eat it as a chopped steak at any fastfood place.

McD also does a nice grilled chicken breast. I have learned how to order things NOT on the menu. They make them special and usually have a breakdown on prices so I can order, for example, just the sausage patty rather than the breakfast biscuit. $1 for it and also the same for a "round egg", which is what they call their real eggs. The scambled ones are from powdered eggs and, IMO are terrible. Of course those round eggs are hard cooked...but one can have a bit of salsa to dress it up, if desired. For $3, I get 2 eggs and a fairly large sausage patty.... or a grilled chicken breast for a dollar and then maybe a side salad, or 2 of them if I am real hungry. You have to specify no batter on it , etc. But once you know what to ask for, it is easy and very tasty. Of course the atmosphere leaves a bit to be desired.

I also discovered I can eat at Cici's pizza by ordering a crustless pizza, light on the sauce and make it with everything on it. You end up with a meat, cheese and veggie cassarole...with salad bar...it works too, but again the atmosphere is somewhat "family" oriented and no a place that would be considered for a "special" or romantic dinner.

I am glad you found a nice restaurant where you have no problem.

The wife and I usually share a meal and just order an extra salad,So far the only place that we have trouble with is an Indian restaurant that only serves foods with flour added,Olive Garden is tricky too.

There are certain Thai recipes which are very low-carb - you can tell by the lack of flour in the sauces. I go to a restaurant in San Jose and have something called "seafood delight," which is shrimp, scallops, crab, fish and mussels in a spicy garlic-chili sauce. I got the food to go and weighed out the rice (wild rice) and it was VERY yummy (very spicy-hot, I suspect most of you would not like it as hot as I, I LOVE hot hot hot spices) and only spiked me 25 points, WITH the rice.

Another place we go, Manora Thai in San Francisco, has a similar dish called a Talay Hot Plate, it's also very low carb and they serve wild rice as well. I need to get a portable scale to weigh the rice when I don't have take out, and in SF, my scale is 50 miles away. Another place in RIchmond has something called "Kra Praw Talay," Prawns and scallops stir fried with garlic and fresh chili, green beans. bamboo shoots and Thai basil.

Indian food uses a lot of flour and is harder to quantify. We usually make our own, modifying a part of the recipe for me.

Try Thai if you have a place in your area. Yummy and a lot easier to control carbs if you know what to order.

We love Thai food,I was talking to the server and was asked if I wanted the American version or the way she liked it.Her way was hot but not crazy flaming(I was sweating like I was in a sauna).
Of course the wife thought it was way too hot for her.
And I am into it because of the taste not just heat.

But for me doable. Ate out for the first time since DX a month ago, at the Olive Garden. B4 dinner BG 109, 2hr after 120, 3hr after 111. Started with the Mussels in garlic, butter and wine appetizer, salad hold the croutons, I didn't even have one bite of the breadsticks which I love, and a wonderful Venitian Grilled Chicken with Apricot sauce served with brocolli, tomatoes and aspargus. I was concerned about the apricot sauce but my meter says okie-dokie. In hind sight I could have taken a bite or two of a breadstick. I printed their online nutrition guide which includes carbs for every dish they serve and brought it with so knew exactly what could and could not safely order.
