| | | Eating out and vegetarians Alright, let me start this out by saying this place is great. I joined today and I really like it here.
Moving aside from that, I wanted to start a topic about diabetic vegetarians. I have enough trouble trying to find something veggie on the menu, much less something low on the Glycemic Index that won't spike my blood sugar. I've been vegetarian for 3/4 of a year and diabetic for 10, and so far I haven't had much trouble. I know the Gardenburgers contain grains, (about 15g per patty) so I factor that in with my carb counting. Are there any suggestions on what to eat when going to fast food places? I'm sick of having a cheese quesadilla at Taco Bell and a yogurt parfait or salad at McDonalds. Places like Arby's I feel trapped. Some places it seems like all their salads include meat. (Chicken salad, etc.)

I can't offer any assistance with vegetarian eating. I am a dedicated carnivore. However, a former employee used to get a 'veggie Whopper' ad Burger King.
As for Arby's, I don't think they offer anything that would fit a vegetarian diabetic. The only vegetables I recall them having are potatoes, and we know what they do for blood sugar.
I'm sure someone with knowledge will post shortly.

| | Yeah, there's not too much choice for us out there in terms of fast food places. I honestly now avoid fast food like the plague for general health reasons, but when I was a teen all I'd eat was bean burritoes from Taco Bell and fries from Wendys. Not good on the BG!! Nowadays, every once in a while I will be too busy or tired to cook something and I will get some fries from Wendys but only unless I get a huge salad as well. I didn't know that Burger King will cook a veggie burger for you, but that's not going to get me to eat there. I love the Morningstar brand veggie/fake chicken burgers - not too much carb and decent protein - and I'd rather cook that at home. Sorry I can't suggest more, I just don't eat that much fast food to be familiar with what's available.
Welcome to the forum by the way! Where are you in the NW? I used to live in Portland.

| | | Welcome to the forum!! I have no knowledge of vegetarian eating. Just wanted to welcome you. I know that we have a few vegetarians out there. Fast food is a hard one for all of us. They are coming out with a few good salads but even those can be surprisingly high in carbs.
Where in the Pacific NW are you. I am in Goldendale, WA on the Columbia River about 2 hours for Portland. We are having more and more from our area signing on.
Welcome again.

| | | Welcome to the forum. Fast food is hard to do if you're a diabetic and really hard to do if you're a vegetarian diabetic. I don't eat at many fast food returants, but if I am there, I usually have a salad or a fish burger, minus the tartar sauce and bun. I'm not a vegetarian, but I do try to avoid meat.

| | Thank you all for welcoming me. Thank you all again for the wonderful suggestions about what to eat. I should actually mention I'm a pescetarian, I do eat fish. And I did know about BK's Veggie Burgers. They do the Morningstar Farms brand and I must say they are good. Also another brand to look into is Quorn, they do wonderful faux chicken, turkey, etc but it is a bit spendy.
I know, I know, fast food is so bad for you. I mostly prepare healthy meals at home for myself but once in a while I have to eat fast food if I'm on the road.
As for those of you who asked where exactly I was, I'm about 10 minutes from Portland in a suburb.
