What to eat before bed

I always have to eat before bed, cos i'm hungry and need more to eat as i workout a lot. However, i don't want to stuff myself with carbs(bread usually) if i don't need it. Anyone got any tips on something good to eat that will get rid of the hunger but is very easy to prepare and with no carbs?

  • I am a:Type 2
T2 2, but when I have evening "munchies", i'll have some peanut butter or a wedge of sharp cheddar cheese or a few nuts (walnuts, almonds or pistachio usually).

T2, diagnosed 8/31/06.
Meds: Metformin-ER 500 mg twice daily, HCTZ 12.5 mg every other day for BP Enalapril 20 mg 1 daily (ace-inhibitor)
Diet: I eat to my meter, generally eating 75-100 carbs/day with the occasional splurge.

I, too, try to have something with protein, like cheese and crackers or cheese by itself. Or a boiled egg. Nuts for crunchy cravings.

I love to munch on walnuts for no/carb...otherwise I'm normally storing a few carbs for the night, so I eat a banana with peanut butter or some kind of 15-30g carb snack.

I'm wondering about this one too.

There is some sort of yoghurt you can mix with cottage cheese, but I really can't stand that mix, so I avoid it. It is low carb, low fat and high protein.

You could go with raw tuna or something like that, you can eat that right out of the box. But it'll make your house smell!

There should be some sort of vegetable/fruit that has no carbs, high protein and is perfect for bedtime meal.

Or you can just take a protein shake.

I usually snack before bed and it's usually on nuts, a few cheese & crackers, or a no-sugar added pudding cup with a little whip cream.

I have to be really careful not to snack before bedtime. I losing weight (32.5 pounds in 10 weeks :D ) and my downfall has always been eating at night. I'm the type of person that I can abstain much easier than only having a small bit (of anything), so I just know that if I had a snack at night it would become a habit rapidly.

I'm a T2 only using Metformin and don't get real lows (lowest so far 70.2) so at night if I want to eat something, I'll either resist completely or go to bed. The strange thing is I no longer get hungry (I believe it's the metformin) but I still get the urge to eat at night (normally around 11pm) while watching TV, guess old habits die hard. I have found myself in the kitchen looking in the fridge, but then I see my DF wristband and decide "NO", I've done too well to slip now, close the fridge and get a glass of water.

I’ve found 2 medium sized apples to be 21gs of carbs each :( works oki after a workout however it raises my bgs as you can imagine and has little protien. I tried some beef jerky the other day, but i can’t say I was that impressed with the stuff, it was nice but was full of carbs. I think you can find carb free beef jerky. Cheese is fatty so i wanted to avoid that. Dono is the answer, I haven’t found anything that works really well yet, I had a look at full fat milk (high in protein and fat) but couldn’t find any in Sainsbury. Eggs could be one option but I can’t see myself hard boiling eggs before I sleep or cooking an omelette with healthy oil. Maybe I should be less lazy ;) My quest continues.

hi thomas, if i need to raise my Bg's at all at bedtime i take a cup of kefir yoghurt drink that gives me 5grams carbs.
i dont bolus for it.

(i believe there is a norwegian version of the same thing? you brew it yourself ~ very easy, and beneficial for digestive health)

I'll agree that eating before bed is not really a good idea if you want to keep the bodyfat down. I find myself snacking around 3 am sometimes anyway though so i figure i might as well eat something before bed.

I'm eating a medium bowl of lowfat youghurt with some organic honey mixed in, and a ricecracker right now. we'll see how that goes. I know there are special proteindrinks with milk protein designed to take before bed, to slowly realease protein into the body. Might try that sometime, when i become eh rich. expensive stuff.

Oh and a note, my pumps shuts of basals completely between 11.30 pm and 2.30 am. still i go low at night every now and then. it's a pain.
