Lately I've been curious about what type of things you use for home-made sharps containers and/or what you do with your empty strip containers??  Every now-and-then I get a hint of something left of field and thought it would be cool to share ingenious ideas here...

I use gatorade bottles for sharps.  Empty strip containers just go into the trash as is.

I use empty laundry detergent bottles and I put duct tape several layers over the cover.  Sadly our state, county do not have a proper recycle program so my detergent bottle goes in the regular trash pickup.

I put the used lancet and test strips in my bathroom garbage can and they go out in the regular trash.

I stick my used lancets in an old vitamin bottle.  At the rate I'm going, its going to be a number of years before I fill it.

When I moved to California I checked with the drug chain nearby what CA required for sharp disposal.
I was suprised to find out the lancets were not deemed to be sharps and there are no special equirements.
Which was different from east coast policies.
I just keep them in a bottle, some day I will figure what to do.

The One Touch Delica Lancets does have a cap to cover the needle.

The gigantic pretzel containers (ones you'd get from Sams or Costco). Asked friends and family to never throw them out, have a stock pile of them in garage.

I use one lancet per bottle of 50 strips.  Each empty strip container becomes used strip container.  Used lancet is capped using new lancet twist-off cup from new lancet which seals that sharp.  I use syringes for 2 or 3 weeks (one syringe for basal, one syringe for bolus) and then bend the needle down inside the needle cover (yes, sometimes the bent needle can poke through the cover if I try to remove the cover from the bent needle), put new syringe pusher cap on used syringe pusher and place "new" looking syringe in to regular garbage.

If I reduce my use of sharps as extremely as possible it seems that nobody will ever see the distributed few sharps I toss in the garbage... which probably still leaves me open to prosecution by the sharps police, maybe.  I suspect that sharps regulations are meant for institutional sharps volumes moreso than residential minimized uses.  Once each month they might comb through my trash to find two syringes and a strip container with a capped lancet? - yeah... find me :).

I'll just blame the good counsellors at DiabetesForums for my minimized sharps-use methods.  I used to use one or two syringes each day for lente beef insulin.  Then you guys suggested using syringes and lancets numerous times.  43-years since coledg using insulin - yeah... it ain't so bad.

I use a SHARPS container provided by my pharmacy. You should ask.

"If it comes in a package BEWARE!"

"If it makes a health claim AVOID!"

A pharmacy chain called Walgreens has sharps disposal tubes attached to their regular trash containers so I toss my lancets there and my bro who has to inject testosterone dumps his used hypos there too..

A casino we go to sometimes ( for shows) has a sharps disposal in the rest rooms. We go about once  month & I keep thinking I should bring my 5 used lancets here, but I keep forgetting.

My Son eats greek-style yoghurt in 1 litre tubs and he cut a square hole in the lid of one, then put a plastic bag in the tub and put the lid back on and I use it for my strips, lancets and needles then when it's full I put a new lid on and take it to a pharmacy ... I re-use the lid with the square cut out - - it's my home-made sharps container.

With my empty strip containers I put them in my handbag for sharps & strips while out
