Arrow One Week On

Hi all...

Thought I'd update you all. I am doing well on the Basal/Bolus... BS less than 14.0mmols all the time.

I am now on 27u AM;22u Noon;32u PM; 44u Lantus.

And have had 2 hypos; sorta self inflicted.. no potatoes with dinner.

Feel so much better.. from 32.9mmols last week to an average of 7.9-10mmols...

I feel in control; and no weight gain yet!!

================================================== ======

Quick Q - Are any of you on Dr Bernstien's Diabetes Solution? or is Carb Counting better?

They are 2 seperate issues really. For a type 1, we take our insulin based on carb and protein intake. Bernstein's method involves low carb intake, but you still count carbs.

Spike is correct. No matter what you can't get rid of carb counting unless you go to a strict no carb diet. Which that brings up alot of commotion on here if no carb is healthy for one since it does promote breaking down cells/fat for energy and produces minor to moderate ketones.

As for your numbers....GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!!

Diabetes is an Art, NOT a Science. You must master the control by skills and not by knowledge alone.

If you aren't going to eat carbs, you'd need to eat fat or protein. Since protein also gets metabolised into glucose at approximately 50%, you would need to eliminate protein also...

I personally, am not up for an all fat diet!

(Even fats gets metabolized at about 10%)

Read Dr. Bernstein a couple times & get the ideas

Don't go by what you have heard Dr. Bernstein says. Get the book and read it very carefully, a couple times, until you get the gist of what he's trying to tell you.

Then do some work to find the level of carbs that gives you the best level of control. I settle for a higher blood sugar target than he suggests--no higher than 120 mg/dl (6.7 mmol/) after meals with a near normal fasting level, but I use his techniques to reach it.

There is so much in his book you will find nowhere else that proves itself to be true when you try it. And very few doctors have the time, inclination or even, sadly, knowledge, to tailor a regimen to your personal needs. So you do have to learn what you can and proceed very cautiously, until you get a regimen that works for you.
