| | | genetic? Hi there! My husband was diagnoesd with type 1 (which we think is now type 1.5) at 26 years old. We just had a son in January and I'm very interested to hear if anyone has found any research on the risk my son has of developing type 1 or 1.5? Most of the research I have read has said that it all depends on the age of the father but does not give me any numbers? I've also read that our son has a 1 in 17 chance of developing type 1 BUT again many of them say the age of diagnosis can play a factor. Any ideas? |

| | My understanding, and I have no research to back this up... was that Type 1/1.5 is genetic; when you are born you are either pre-disposed to it or not, but it is not proven to be hereditary. Type 2 on the other hand is hereditary.

| | | I have Type I and no one in the family ever has--I am the first. I also know people (one in particular) who had grandparents that had it, were overweight, etc. and she never got it (I am talking over 400 lbs). Maybe it can be inherited if all the recessive genes match up, but I really don't think Type I is as much as it is environmental or something--viral. Just my opinion. |

| | | Genetics My father was dx at age 32 type I. I was diagnosed this year type 1.5 at the age of 28. My daughter who is 10 frequently has low blood sugar, which is how I started at her age. So, I pray to god that she will not be the third in our family! |

| | This is a thread I started with the same question, but specific to T1. You may find it answers some of your questions. http://www.diabetesforums.com/type-1...-children.html

| | | I was just dx with type 1.5 last month. We have three children and I was wondering the same thing. If it is gentic.. I have questions.. I have two brothers and one sister. So far i am the only one who is diabetic in my immediate family. My mother's first cousin has type 1 but started a child. I guess I had a predispostion for it and something triggered it now. At 37, and slim and active.. I wasn't expecting this at all. I intend to ask the pediatrician about the kids.

| | | I was dx'ed at age 32...type 1, no one in my family has ever had type 1 as far back as anyone can look. I have three children, all well and healthy. I personally think that there are some families with a genetic predisposition for it, and for some I think it's purely some environmental/outside issue. I think thats the case for myself, though I may never be able to prove it. |

| | I'm the only type 1 in my family. I was misdiagnosed, mostly because I am overweight, as a type 2 after having 3 pregnancies in which I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. No one, until this year, decided to actually check my blood for C-Peptide and GAD...grrr! That's what I get for being overweight... however, I digress.
Everyone on my dad's side of the family is type 2. There's no one in my mom's side of the family that's a type 1 or 2. However, my mom does have some hypoglycemia every now and again...
So, type 2 is definitely a factor in my family, but not type 1. I do get my five kids tested yearly, just in case. |

| | | You really can't answer your question without a clear diagnosis. Most 1.5 are one form or another of LADA which is an inherited genetic mutation directly in the body's insulin production/processing. This would be inheritable by the comparatively simply rules of dominant/recessive genetics. It is at least theoretically possible to test the mother's DNA for the possiblity of passing it on.
If the diabetes is not LADA, the situation depends what the actual disease is and how it's caused.
Both straighforward type 1 and type 2 disease have genetic components, type 2 much more than type 1, which most people don't expect. However, these diseases are effected by many genes, not all of which are now known.
The best to you and your husband. |

| | | I too am the only person in my family to be discovered with type 1 D. Surprised the heck out of me! At first I was sure someone made a mistake because there is no family history, but alas, I have accepted the unfortunate reality of "luck". If there is a genetic component to this is was not expressed for as far back as my family could check out. Just lucky, I guess.... Can you get genes predisposing you for type 2 and end up with type 1? |

| | | Hi Fran and welcome to the forums. I am the first type one to be diagnosed in my family at age 32. However, there are some type two's in my mother's side of the family.
My doctor has told me that many of us are predisposed to diabetes. However, it takes a lot of circumstances to set the train in motion to actually getting it. Teach your kids early about the signs and symptoms and teach them to eat properly. Hopefully, they can escape the diabetes train. |

| | | genetics My son was the first diabetic diagnosed in our family. He was 23 when dx last Jan. Like your husband he may actually be a 1.5. We do, however, have some autoimmune diseases in our family. My mother died from complications from scleraderma, my mother's sister has inflammatory bowel syndrome and my double cousin (mom's were sisters, dad's were bros.) has MS. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
