Allergy or reaction from taking Lantus

Hi: I am new to this site and found it because I am concerned about muscular soreness and stiffness which have developed over the past two years while taking Lantus. I am 69 and in very good physical condition. Work out at Ballys twice a week and never experienced this problem until sometime after starting on Lantus. Doctor says it has nothing to do with Lantus but has no explanation. I don't think it is natural at all. I also take a small dose of Avalide but only as a precaution against high BP. I do not have high blood pressure. The people at Lantus deny that they have ever had any complaint of this nature. Please let me know what your view of this may be as I am getting no logical explanation from doctors.

When I first began taking Lantus last year, I had some swelling at the injection site for about 12 hours after the dose; however, after about three weeks using Lantus, that problem stopped. I haven't had any other problems with Lantus, though there are reports that Lantus is linked to depression (there is a thread about that here somewhere!!).

I am sorry to hear about your difficulties and hope you are able to sort them out soon.

I had no problems with Lantus. But there have been some reports of adverse reactions to it. It is difficult, though, to know if it is the Lantus or something else causing it. The only way you can be sure is if you stop using Lantus for a while. You could try switching to Levimer or NPH for a couple of weeks and seeing if the symptom goes away.

I have a mild allergy to Lantus, but my symptoms are nothing like that. I get hives and itchy welts (well, got, once, I haven't taken Lantus since this happened) near where I injected it.

After about a month on Lantus I developed sore joints too. Searching on Google Groups I found another posting reporting the same thing.

The joint soreness went away when I stopped Lantus.

Another problem I also had with Lantus was that my PPs went UP when I got my basal dose to the right level, which seemed odd.

I had a bad reaction to Levemir too--very high blood pressure, so for now I use bolus insulin alone and I find that if I keep my PPs normal, my fasting falls right in line.

I have a form of MODY which affects secretion of insulin in response to incoming glucose, but apparently not basal secretion, so my situation is different from that of most people with diabetes.

Do you take a statin? My husband (not diabetic) had muscle and joint pain and stiffness while taking a statin. It is a known side effect of Lipitor and others.
