Beer

Any of you people big beer drinkers? Do you still drink since your diagnosis?

I still drink, but not that often. I tend to limit myself even more than before. What's your experience with drinking since your diagnosis?

I'll have a couple now and then. Since my control has been tighter, I find it makes me hypo several hours later. I cut my basals down later.

yum

i love beer. love it.
loved it before being type 1
love it after being type 1 for 3 years.
i limit myself to three. never any more.
i used to limit myself by however i could get into my body. but that was grad school.
i am on lantus and novalog, and my fav beer is around 12-15 carbs. sierra nevada pale ale. so i take a unit of novalog with my beer.
same with guiness.
i have normal BG at bedtime (whenever that is) and normal in the AM.
but. i think i am in pretty good control, and have figured this out over some time.
hard liquor, like bourbon doesnt seem to effect my BG that much. and wine is about the same as the beer. i love big bold reds. and usually have a unit for about 6 ounces of red wine.

um. yea!!! I LOVE my beer! Don't drink it every day, or even once a week, but about twice a month or so, and yes, I usually get my "groove" on when I do! LOL

There are two couples we go out with a couple/few times a month with, and it's us ladies that are the drinkers in the group, and we LOVE our beer!! We'll sit and drink usually a minimum of 2 pitchers between us 3 ladies ... sometimes 3 or 4!

So far (almost 2 years now) , I've had NO problems! BUT! I'm VERY careful when I drink! I always make sure I eat before ... AND .... I watch my BG's VERY closely!! I'm also probably "hyper" aware of how I feel!

Test and test lots, and be VERY aware of how you feel! And EAT first!!!

My case is a bit unusual ( recently dx as 44 yr old type 1 and insulin resistant, on insulin for type 1 positive antibodies and orals for type 2) and I have found that two glasses of wine 5 or 6 nights a week (with dinner) does me good. I am on such a small dose of lantus that if I want to eat a high carb dinner, a glass or two of wine does me good by keeping my carb absorption spread out over the course of the evening and I get no dips or spikes and can ease up on the carb regime. I am very very good at following my dr's advice but I am a tad independent minded when it comes to limiting my wine to 1
4oz glass per day! Even have 3 occasionally.. oops did I say that out loud?

Beers

Literarature says no more than 2 per day.

I try to keep it at no more than 3 and only light beers, and it depends on the day of the week. my bg's are lowered during the time I'm drinking them then they go up the next morning.

The reason people with D shouldn't drink beers or alcohol (in large quantities) is because the long term effect or damage to the liver.
Miller lite has 3 g of carbs, Bud lite about 4g, regulars have a lot more.

Cheers

Dan,
All literature that I have read says 2 per day for men, 1 per day for women.

I'll take a couple Michelob Ultras (the 32 oz kind). Very low carb and tastes good, IMO.

Or I'll sip a glass or two of single malt or some spiced rum. With hard liquor I test every hour and have a snack ready. No DP after these types of nightcaps so I have to change my basal pattern for the next morning.

I'll have a Mojito over a beer anyday! I've been hammered once since diagnosis (by accident!) and it scared the **** out of me! I'm not a big drinker anyway so it's been easy to drink lightly!

Sheeesh I am really missing my beer with this coeliacs desease I have come down with. I mainly drink cider these days. I find cider easier to manage than beer somehow.
Alcohol is fine as long as it doesnt stop you looking after yourself and it isnt becoming a problem. We just have to take extra care and remember to test. If you get really drunk it can mask hypo warning signs if you still have any.
Can't say anything about beer pre diagnoisis as I was only 3 years old and a little too young for a beer.

Peace and Sheeesh
Rich

well I started drinking after I was diagnosed, does that count?

I was 15 at the time though (",)

still drink beer now - mind you alcohol and good control aren't always good bedfellows.

Yes, I drink beer.. big time... had 8-9 drinks the other night.. big party w/ friends... I'd just say err on the side of being high... lower basal if you know you're gonna drink... and just go for it...test througout the night and make sure you eat a little bit throughout the night too... once in a while going big seems ok... but I'm not a dr., I only play one on TV....
