Just came back from the endo today. Overall, he's pleased with how my basal rates are being tweeked on the pump. I've also lost a few pounds since last month! Woohoo!

The endo went over with me (again) how I am GAD-65 positive with Insulin resistance...and that there's no timetable to know how long my little pancreas will continue to make insulin. But he did emphasize that my pancreas will come to a point of producing zero insulin...

How will I know when my honeymoon is over? I was dx'd in 2002, treated as Type 2 for one year, and then Type 1.5 since then. Been on MDI since October 2003...just started pumping May 2007. My Lantus doses were 12 units daily, with Novolog boluses 3-4 units per meal.

I've always known that I will eventually stop making insulin...but always had the outlook that I'm determined to be on the world's longest honeymoon. I'm a little freaked that one day, I may go into DKA if my pump or tubing malfunctions. And I'm just not okay with that! Oh, what a day it's been...just thought I'd seek some advice...

hi sleepy hound, this is a difficult question to answer as everyone is so different.

my honeymoon has been like an aero plane that keeps losing atitude everytime i get a bacterial infection. if there is any pancreatic function left in me its very minimal i should think.

i should think any of the long-timers here would say something about a diabetics insulin requirements increasing over a certain number of years/time.

i guess your endo will keep doing tests and let you know when its over for sure.

At a guess I'd say when a C-peptide test indicates your pancreas is no longer producing any insulin??

I am fairly new to this diabetic thing (5 months, 2 as type 2 and 3 as type 1 LADA) can they test for insulin production when I am injecting unsulin every day? Wouldn't the test simply say yes there is insulin present (because I injected it)? Is there a way to find out if mt last 5 beta cells have finally given up the ghost? My last test for insulin production showed a minimal production while my BG numbers were 200. We immediately put me on insulin. I am thinking that I am still on the "honeymoon" period tho they tell me that life will be easier when those last few cells actually die off because we won't have to wonder if they will help with insulin production today or not.

Just googled "C-peptide test" and what I've read implies that levels of C-peptide reflect insulin production rather than amount of insulin in the bloodstream. But it may be open to intepretation.....

Interesting - my endo has said that bs control is easier during honeymoon than once the beta cells have died off totally. I don't know one way or the other as my honeymoon is still going strong - diagnosed T2 3.5 years ago, diagnosed T1.5/LADA 2.5 years ago, started lantus 6U/day 3 months ago.
