| | I want to gain weight I am newly diagnosed as LADA, been on Lantus and Humalog since June 19. Have not seen a dietitian yet. I am carb counting, and it is working pretty well. But what difference does the Glicemic index make when counting carbs with Humalog? on low GI, will the Humaog run out before the glucose kicks in? is there a maximum Carb or Carb/sugar load that I should take in any one meal? I know I will have to self test, but what are you other LADA's doing? And has anyone who has lost a significant amount of weight, pre-diagnosis, and without wanting to, gained the weight back? If so, what was your meal plan? |

In theory, lo-GI carbs should require slightly less bolus insulin than hi-GI carbs. But I think the effect is quite small. I hope someone with more experience comments as well - I'm only using basal Lantus at the moment, but the doctor & I are discussing starting bolussing shortly, so this is a question I will also face. In theory (again...) once you know your insulin/carb ratio you can eat anything you like & take the appropriate insulin dose to cover it. In practice the insulin/carb ratio is not a fixed number, so you will inevitably have times when you overshoot/undershoot your target post-meal bs reading. Personally, I like the "law of small numbers" principle, which in essence says 'the fewer the carbs, the less insulin required, therefore the smaller the error (bs over/undershoot)'. Which implies a low-carb way of eating - this is not for everyone. Quote:

But it is apparently fairly common for diabetics to gain weight once they start on insulin. I think I've avoided it by sticking to a low-carb eating plan. |

| | | the year or so before i was diagnosed i lost about 30 lbs, which was pretty substantial since i was 180 and then was 150 in a few months. after being on lantus and novalog for a few years, i have come back up to about 170-175. as far as carbs go, i feel i have my insulin ratios down really well, so i pretty much eat anything i want, but i still dont eat sweets or pasta or pizza.
i have a few meals that i have calculated really well, like when i make indian food, it is 5 units if i have yogurt with it. and my breakfast is 3 units of novalog every morning. i have a reasonably strict diet, of no hydrogenated oils, transfats, soy, or any oils other than coconut, extra virgin olive oil, and butter. i dont eat any of the solvent extracted oils like canola, soy, vegetable oil, or light olive oil.
so once you get your ratios figured out, i think you can pretty much eat whatever. but i wouldnt over do anything.
