| | I asked my diabetic nurse about Type1.5 and she had never heard of it and laughed
She said she thinks it's an American thing but that there are lot's of different types of diabetics but that they mainly stick to the 2 main types.

| | | Originally I was considered Juvenile Diabetic,Type 1, insulin dependant. Sometime during my young adulthood I was then termed Insulin dependant,as time went on it was Type 1. Now I have become somewhat resistant and I also take Symlin,so am I type 1.and 1.5? I don't really care as long as there's a treatment for it.I don't think the doctors really know anymore than we diabetics do. Whatever they need to do to keep their own records straight.I don't believe they need to term it type 1,type 1,5.type 2. We are diabetics and the treatments are different for different people, whatever works at the time and through the years.

Diabetes is very common and yet everyone has different story. How can they all be pigeon holed into 2 or 3 categories. They still don't know if I'm Type I or Type 2.

That is, a type 1 who is also insulin resistant. Type 1.5 is someone whose beta cells are being attacked by their immune system, but who continues to produce some of their own insulin. This can go on for many years. In other words, it is a type 1 on a very long honey moon.

| | | Blue Sky, you are absolutely correct! A T1 can also become insulin resistant by gaining weight over the years. This can be treated with various insulin sensitizing drugs both oral and injectable as is the case with Symlin.
Many T1.5 are misdiagnosed as T2 due to age at time of diagnosis. Oral medications fail soon or never work at all. Only a regimen of insulin gives continued control and also reduces the pressure on their beta cells.
