carrying insulin around in the summer

Not sure where to post this. I'm wondering how people organize their supplies. When it is really hot and you need your insulin, how do you carry it around? Do you bring a d_a_n_g cooler? Does anyone have any neat ideas for a special bag to carry around insulin, needles, meds, strips, etc. Has anyone designed their own purse/bag for diabetics? I'm so disorganized that I even misplaced my humalog pen (it was in a nice big case too). Seems to me somebody should be marketing some awesome bag/briefcase for diabetics!

For females: a big, beautiful purse usually works best! (and one with different pockets!) I'm on the pump now, but was taking multiple shots daily, and a purse does work the best. As long as your insulin and strips aren't sitting in the car all day or out in the hot sun (like at a beach) you should be fine just carrying them with you.

What's not in my pump, is in my purse. I just keep it out of the sun and out of a car. My stuff in my purse is in a small camera bad and it does have a bit of insulation, but not a lot. I've never really had a problem.

i went to WalMart and checked out their camera bags...... they have many pockets and a long handle to the camera bag, so it's easy to carry around and the multiple pockets keeps things separate so they are easier to find

i use the frio bag to carry my insulin.........the frio works on passive cooling thru evaporation, and the frio needs to be open to the air for the evaporation to occur....... do not leave the frio in direct sunlight

good luck

(google frio, they are on-line)

There are lots of neat bags and organizer kits out there for keeping your insulin. Many of them even have built in spots to put ice or a cold pack to keep things cool during the day. I've thought of getting one of the messenger style bags from here: aDorn | Stylish Medical Accessories but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Does anyone have experience with the Adorn bags?

I bought a small case that has a freeze pack in it (it's not a frio) from somewhere online a few years ago. There are a lot of sizes and styles available...google up insulin case.

Insulin and refrigeration...

...Although, from what I know, correct me if I'm wrong, once you open humalog or lantus (what I'm currently using) they're not supposed to be refrigerated. Many of these products seem to imply that insulin must be refrigerated at all times.

It's incredible how many products are out there once you start to look!

Lantus needs to stay refrigerated I was told. Humulog can stay out and be good for 30 days. I think I am going to buy one of those little plug in coolers I have seen advertised to use in Motel rooms, etc. Looks handy. Anyone tried them? From Medicool I think. They also sell Frio wallets. I don't always trust the small refrigerators at motels if you can get one. I always stick a bottle of water in to make sure it doesn't free--and has.

FYI, it clearly states on my Lantus Solostar box that it only needs refrigeration prior to being opened...I'm not sure why this is...doesn't really make sense to me...

Yeah.. I've been on the Lantus and Novolog pens for a little over 3 years now and I just keep my pens refrigerated until I need to use a pen, then I keep it out of the fridge until I'm done using it. Most insulin in the pens will last for 28 days.

I use the "Dia-Pak Delux" Diabetic supply case. Google it. It comes with a freezable reuseable ice pack, and it's got pockets and slots for all your stuff...

The lantus needs to be kept refridgerated until it's opened to hold it's shelf life (several months), but once it's open it's only good for 28 days refridgerated or not.

However, you don't want it exposed to 100 degree heat even if it's been open. The Dia-Pak Delux bag is really nice if you live someplace like Texas!

Somebody does make wonderful bags for your diabetes stuff:

Stick Me Designs.

I bought one of their bags a while back and can put my meter, my pen, needles, syringes, glucose and even change and my credit cards in it and carry it like a purse. You might be able to put a small cooling thing in it too if you needed to.

Don't leave your insulin in the car if you can help it. for your meter and/or strips. I killed a meter leaving it in a parked car on a hot day. If you have to leave the insulin in the car for a short time, put it in the glove compartment wrapped in something if possible.

For a long trip, you can use a small cooler and put the insulin in on top of some padding and freezer packs. You don't want the insulin touching the freezer packs. Most hotels have fridges now.
